Apple Software Update Blank List Issue

Hello,

I am experiencing a wide-spread issue with apple software update on windows. In an attempt to update itunes and quicktime, apple software update is run but comes up with a blank list (see figure 1). This has happened on 3 machines that were freshly imaged (with an older version of itunes), and 5 machines that have been in use for months/years. Operating systems include windows vista, 7 and 8 Release Preview; they all have varying internal specifications. Some computers are x32 others are x64. I have also had a friend who is outside of the network system the other mentioned computers are in, in an attempt to use software update. He came across the same results. Also as a note, the current versions of itunes that are being targeted to be updated range from 10.5 to 10.6.1.7.

I have attempted running a repair on apple software update on one machine, with no change.

Has anyone else experience this issue? I see one other similar discussion post at the moment found here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4040644?answerId=18688827022#18688827022

But no where else am I seeing mention of issues of this sort.

Thanks for any input!

Good news, the ASU seems to be working again(starting today for me and for the past few days I've seen positive reports from other places on planet earth). I've only been able to see this on my computer at work(running Win 7 32) but it definitely IS working as it should. It loads, starts the appropriate green bar search progress, and then finds anything on my computer that needs to be either updated or installed - I know this because I do not have Safari installed on my work computer and it is now 10 for 10 in loading and finding and telling me that I should download and install Safari 5.1.7(everything else on my work computer from Apple is already installed and fully updated). Hopefully, when I get home, I will find that my desktop and laptop are also working as they should. It appears it was a problem from Apple's end this entire time. As others have speculated in other similar threads; Apple most likely "fixed" this on their end about 3 days ago, but has been slowly dispersing the "fix" throughout their worldwide update servers. Some people were lucky enough to have the servers in their neck of the woods fixed earlier then others. Hopefully, as Apple finally matriculates the fix to ALL their update servers, everyone will be back up and running smoothly with their Apple Software Updater. If the ASU on your machine is still wonky, just hold out for a bit longer; It should be up and working any day now.

When I went home on Saturday 6/30/12, I found that both my Desktop(Windows 7 64bit) and my laptop(Windows Vista 32bit) were back up with the Apple Software Updater and running perfectly. So in my neck of the woods(Eastern Pennsylvania in the USA), everything seems to have been "fixed" by Apple. I know how frustrating it is waiting but it should, hopefully, be up and running for everyone quite soon.

I seemed to have fixed my issues on a number of machines. It seemed at first that there was a bad or iffy Quicktime update from Apple that messed up the Apple Software Updater. I went to Apple's site and downloaded the latest Quicktime update, 7.7.2. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL837 ) I then ran it on two machines that had an older version of Quicktime, and repaired the installation on machine that had the current version. On all three machines that where not updating, they all begin to work. Until.....

Until I restarted Windows. It was broken again. I then ran the Quicktime update again to repair the installation. Update worked again. I then restarted the machine, and Update died. My thought is that there is a process that the repair of Quicktime starts when the repair is ran, but then either fails when trying to start or doesn't start at all when the machine is rebooted into Windows.

Apple has taken a step backwards today.

Apple Software Update for Windows still works, but now it takes on the order of 15 to 20 tries to get an instance where it works. (Windows 7 running in a Boot Camp partition.)

In addition, there is an unusually long delay after the progress bar advances before it finishes up and displays the normal "OK" box announcing that your software is already up to date.

It is acting very much like Apple's servers for handling Windows software updates are overloaded and rejecting connections, and the Windows version of the app is not handling that gracefully -- i.e., telling you that the check is unavailable right now and please try again later.

That, or perhaps the one Apple guy who knows what part of the servers to kick is on vaction today....
