My late-2011 MacBook pro has been lagging a lot lately, I was wondering if upgrading my memory would affect the files I already have saved, or affect my computer in any other way?

No, you will not lose any files if you're upgrading your RAM (memory)
If however, you're talking about hard drive, that would be a totally different story.
Make sure you buy RAM from a reputable dealer like OWC and Crucial.
Use brand name RAM only made for your MB.
You'll see an increase of speed on the apps that uses or need more amount of RAM.
If by memory you mean (ram) then no your files will not be affected at all. Hope the upgrade brings you better speeds :3.
