New 2012 Macbooks, Google Chrome, and Kernel Panics

Sorry ducman & clinton but I've already returned it to the store. After experiencing the crashes I freaked out and immediately invoked the 14-day no questions asked Returns policy and that was before I found this thread. After all that though, I still don't have the replacement because they're out of stock! So I'm >$2k out of pocket and no macbook retina disp.

That's unfortunate. Mine haven't crashed since the update and I'm been using chrome exclusively. I am sure that if there is such a defect in their product that requires a hardware fix, Apple would take a full refund regardless of the 14-day no questions asked.

Interestingly I've gotten this Chrome crash, with the exact com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD4000Graphics stack trace, on my new 2012 15" Macbook Pro even though it has the NVIDIA graphics card. So it would appear that the same driver is invoked for either card, or else I don't understand the architecture.

Anyhow thanks for confirming and clarifying what's going here, it seems reasonably avoidable until come in. Even if Google fixes Chrome I might retain an older build just to keep sending Apple crash reports until they fix the driver.

Just wanted to post in this topic to say I'm having the same issue on my MBP 15" that is only half a year old. It started off slow; every once in a while I'd open a tab which would stay blank (white) and freeze the browser, causing me to restart Chrome. Not a huge problem. Now it has progressed to the point where if I open Chrome and change the URL the whole browser crashes and I have a matter of seconds to force quit before the entire system freezes and I have to manually restart my Mac.

I'm not happy having to switch back to Firefox or Safari but so far I'm not seeing any problems.

I'm running a 15" MacBook Pro that's coming up to two years old, (OSX 10.6.8) and I've been having what sounds like the same problem. About five times in the last few days, I've been using Chrome when my system completely locks up. I can move the cursor but not interact with anything and have to to a hard shutdown with the power button. I know this Chrome issue is a problem that's chiefly been affecting newer macs but could it also be causing the problems wth my system?

In some ways it would be reasuring if it was as I've been starting to get worried that the freezes are indicative of a major problem with my whole computer. Really appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on this.

Ducman and clintonfrombirmingham...it seems I've led you on because I too was led on by store staff. I've received my replacement RetDisp MBP and it only has 10.7.4, the same as the one I returned.

No worries - surely Mountain Lion will be released this week? And then we'll have a whole new discussion area!

My brand new macbook pro 15" crashes and freezes after 30-40 seconds of Diablo 3, either with Lion or Bootcamp (Diablo 3 and Skyrim). Nothing to do but turning it on and off. I can move the cursor but can't interact with anything. The sound keeps working though.

Anyway, I freaked out as well and returned it according to the 14 days return policy for an exchange. If the same problem occurs with the new one, I will ask for a refund and stick to my Macbook black with Snow Leopard (who never crashed in 4,5 years).

edit : Chrome was not installed on this laptop.

Hey Wagamuffin, same problem over here, but in my case my MBP complete freezes and I have to press the power button to power it off. I believe the Intel HD 4000 driver is the problem and I hope ML fixes it.

I have a MBP 13" from late 2009, and have been having the freeze/crash problem with Chrome for the past 4 or 5 months. I just upgraded to mountain lion, and it's still there. I have

The Google Chrome/Intel 4000 GPU problem was solved by Google over a month ago and only affected 2012 machines with the Intel 4000. What you describe on your machine just isn't normal. I'd head over the the Chrome discussion boards to see if you can find a solution for your 2009 model.

And try using Safari or Firefox until the crashing stops.

I have been using Firefox (which has become a slow pig) and Safari. When you say the "Chrome discussion board" do you mean one (where is it) on discussions.apple.com or is there some sort of discussion board hosted by Google?
