Mail keeps becoming unread after selecting, reading or return after deleting

Hi,

I have a problem in Mail that I can not seem to resolve which started some time after I started to used iCloud. I have been reading emails, which as they should become become unmarked once you have read them. Few hours later or next day or so, these same mails are marked again and then I will start reading them again finding out these are old mails. very frustrating and counterproductive. I use iCloud and I use organized mail boxes organized according to programs for instance in my mac account which are synced across devices through iCLoud. The problem only shows in these custom mailboxes not in the IMAP account boxes in which mails would arrive initally without the sorting rules I use to transfer specific mails to the mailboxes in Mac account folder, Hope I am making sense. Also I now realize that even deleting mails does not delete them, they return after a while !

I do not know how to solve this problem but solving it I must , help !!! Apple !!!!!????

Hi Glenn 🙂

Thanks ! These are custom local mailboxes synced across devices. It appears (and I am careful here) that manual moving does not yield the problem. Regarding rules: the ones in question move messages with equal to address X to selected local mailbox Mac account. I also have a rule that transfers mails with ending @domain.com and a rule or 2 that selects for certain content this may overlap with the above rules.

Thanks again

First, are you sure they are local mailboxes? Did you create them in Mail, or iCloud website? If they are local, then they won't sync across devices unless you sync with another program.

When the rule moves the message, do you want it to show as read, or unread?

If they move as unread, are you actually reading them in the mailbox they are moved to?

You said they reappear as unread later. Is this happening after being moved and read in the mailbox you created?

Just trying to get a full understanding on what is happening.

For those that return to unread status after deleting, that's a miscommunication between the server and the computer. iCloud is a server based account. Each time you perform an action on the computer such as reading a message, the computer sends a message to the server that you have read it. Then the server sends a message back to the computer to complete that action. If it doesn't get the message correctly, it reverts back to where it was. So, the server got the delete action correct, but failed to get the read reciept from the computer correctly.

This happens to me also from time to time. I've also noticed it happens more with the conversation view where a new message will come in the same conversation after deleting a previous one.

There are no settings for iCloud to handle read or unread messages. Only rules could change the status of a message.

If you're iCloud account is not performing correctly, the only this you can do to is to open the iCloud preferences and sign out of iCloud. This will remove the account and files from the computer. Then sign back into iCloud to put the account back.

Hi Glenn,

The mailboxes are created in Mail and are shown under "Mac account User".

They sync perfectly across devices: a macbookpro and an iPad no problem there, all files visible on these devices.

I want the rule to move the messages to the selected local mailboxes and keep them unread, it does that. I read them in the new mailbox they have been moved to. But reading and/or deleting them is not working (yes after the rules moved them) and this is pretty consistent, whether I just read and not delete or read and delete they come back. It is not happening from time to time...

Recently I got another problem maybe this says something to you: mails with attachments like a ppt file do not download as file but become complete gibberish, however when I log in webmail for the email account in question the correct ppt file is there and downloadable. What the heck is this ? is this related to the above problem ? This is not happening to all mails with attachments it appears random.

So when I log out from iCloud to reset as an attempt to solve the problem do I risk losing any mail files and folders ? thanks !

I understand what you are saying the problem is, but I don't understand your setup. You keep referring to local mailboxes that sync across devices. Not possible with iCloud (assumng that is what you're using) or IMAP. Local mailboxes are only located on the device that they are created on unless you use another syncing program to sync to all devices.

So, can you explain a little more. If they are local mailboxes, they would be list as subfolders under ON My Mac which would hide when you collapse it. If they are IMAP mailboxes, they would be listed beneath the On My Mac in subfolders of the account they belong to such as the iCloud account.

So can you tell me for sure if they are IMAP or Local. If they are local, how are you syncing them between devices?

Second, can you tell me if you using iCloud only, or if not iCloud, what account are you having problems with (gmail, etc).

Not sure about the new problem. Question marks in a message generaly show files that have not yet downloaded, attatchements such as pictures that you choose not to download automatically, or files that the computer doesn't recognize or has not program to open them. This might be unrealated.

Hi Glenn

I suspect I am using the wrong terminology or at least different from what you are used to perhaps. What I call local mailboxes are not under On My MAc but under "Mac account "username" with all my subfolders (which I call local mailboxes) really local and they do sync I just checked this again to make sure I am not going nuts and did a test with all rules off and manually transferring mails on device 1 (Macbook Pro), they nicely show up in the folders I put them in on device 2 (iMAc). I know the files are local under library/Mail. It is the same functionality that was in mobileme my previous setup it comes with my mac.com email account. Hope I am not confusing you more now 🙂

So no separate software for syncing sorry...

Mail accounts in question are accounts for businesses I am involved in hosted at Godaddy and are IMAP accounts and eys I use iCloud.

Cheers

This does happen to me on occasion with iCloud or Yahoo. But that's because of an issue where there is a communication failure with the server not getting the proper information of the action performed. Note I said occasionally. That doesn't sound like your main problem as you have indicated that it always happens.

I've seen some issues with Godaddy on different problems. I've never used a Godaddy account, so I know nothing of it. But I suspect it could be an issue with the way it works and possibly settings at the Godaddy website. You do have some control on server settings for mailboxes mapped to the main mailboxes (Inbox, Sent, Trash, Junk, & Drafts) through Mail's preferences. But once the messages are moved from a main mailbox to other IMAP mailboxes (those will show under the imap account in the sidebar along with other mailboxes not mapped to the main mailboxes), the only control on those is from the server and website settings.

If you move a message to trash or junk from the inbox, or delete a message from one of the main mailboxes, then I suspect it will work correctly depending on your settings in Mail (storing messages on the server should be checked and mapped correctly). But doing this from a mailbox you have created outside of the main may have different reactions.

Maybe you can change a rule to move the message to the trash instead of a mailbox you created and test it to see if you get the same results.

In order for this to change between all devices and website, you need to have the main mailboxes to in Mail's preferences set to store messages on the server. That way the actions will be duplicated everywhere.

I use Go Daddy for my personal domain (and IMAP emails) and the problems I've had and especially my wife are supposedly known issues with Go Daddy (or so the IT people tell me). I delete an email and it comes right back. I move an email to a folder on Go Daddy (from my mac, say) and on the phone it has not moved. On and on. I can't say I've had problems like this on iCloud.

If the computer and iPhone don't sync, then you might have it set up as POP. Imap settings here: http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/4714/setting-up-your-email-address-with- imap

If that's not the case, then I don't know. I'm not familiar with that provider, but I know others have problems with it. I don't follow those discussions, so I'm not sure what's fixable or not. I see not reason though if set up correctly, that the syncing for basic mailboxes shouldn't act correctly.

Gmail has some not so basic features that can cause numerous problems if not set correctly. That may be similiar with godaddy.

Someone who uses it could provide much more information if they would be so kinds as to post.
