As of very recently, my mother is having a similar problem on both of her computers (a 2010 iMac and a brand new 2012 MacBook Air). The video invitation goes out, the beeping, green light and camera initialize, and that's it. There is a slight stutter in the video, as if something is going to happen, and then nothing. The window continues to say "Connecting..." and about 20 seconds later, I get this window:

What could it be? Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Can you confirm that the paragraph that starts iChat Connection Log does in fact say Error 7

Old logs can be accessed in Console > ~/Library/Logs > iChatConnectionErrors (By date and time)

It may not say Error 7 As it is Messages and may list a four digit code.

Hi,

Still a bit of yes and no situation.

I have compared some Error Codes in iChat 6 and Messages with those from earlier versions of iChat

Error 1008 relates to Error 8 which is a bit of a catch-all when other causes cannot be matched.

Error 7 in earlier version relates to a Message on the Chat window that the failure was due to no Data for 10 Secs

This is s break in the connection tat is not iChat related.

It can be created if you pull the cable if connected over Ethernet (Or turn off the Wifi card in System Preferences > Network)

The Earlier Versions never showed an Error code -1

Generally I have seen only 4 digit codes for iChat 6 and Messages.

These were the know codes and causal messages

http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page16a.html#_table

Try setting the app menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps

This is low enough to stop some "Security Features" cutting in on the router but is high enough for 4 way Video chats.

If the issue persists try 200kbps in a 1-1 chat.

HI,

So no messages or alerts from AIM when you sing in to the AIM Settings Page ?

Please could you expand your answers ?

I get between 30 and 40 alerts for Apple that there have been new posts in Threads I have contributed to.

That can be up to 20 conversation with people about iChat or Messages.

I logged into ito it ( AIM setting and it was on, what now?)

This post took some reading of previous parts of the thread to find out what it was I asked you.

Not always easy in threaded view as the thread is no over 4 "pages" long for me. (Pages vary on how meny posts per page you decide on).

HI,

The Original Poster posted this...

I added my friend and whenever she tries to call me i never get a call , but the green camera light always turns on. Then, when i try calling her, she gets it but it doesn't load. HELP PLZ. I've tried everything and I'm getting very annoyed by this....

At the time this suggested he was using Lion and iChat 6 and that he was not seeing Visible Invite that were being sent and that the Camera would seem to start up when Invites were sent to him.

Invites sent in the other direction seem to get to the "next Stage" but still would not connect.

You posted you had the same problem.

I asked if you had any messages from the App (Meaning any alerts of information boxes).

quite rightly you supposed I was talking about you receiving IMs and iMessages as you were using Mountain Lion yourself and therefore the Messages app.

I explained the different ports iChat and therefore Messages uses over the Internet in the different functions of the App.

This appeared to confuse you about needing to switch - I presume manually in some way to these ports.

Using a pic of the Messages > Preferences > Accounts pane at the Server Setting tab I showed where the Login port for an AIM login was held.

I pointed out that between iChat 5 and iChat 6 the server name and the port had change - even though for a long time the regular posters had been saying port 443 was the better port.

I pointed to the Apple Doc that is the basis of the table in the earlier post about the ports used.

I was very clear about which ports you could and could not change.

I was also clear how we (As regular posters) had come to suggest port 443 as some Modems and routers had issues with File Sharing and AIM Logins using the same port.

I went on to show you a Pop up iChat or Messages can show you when a chat connection Fails for some reason and an exert of the log that such a pop up contains

You said in relpy that the Mac Firewall was ready and the router was doing UPnP but you still couldn't connect.

I suggested two things

1) Check the Auto Accept itiems was not active.

2) Change the Bandwidth Limit in Messages > Preferences > Video section

You replied that the AppleScript was not active

No info on changing the speed setting

I then posted a link from my Web Site about the Apple Test Accounts for possible Video testing.

You said you could not find the Table 1 and that your AIM account was not logging in.

I restated that the link was were the Table 1 was and that you should try Disabling and re-Enabling the AIM account.

(That is the end of Page one for me)

You said the AIM account now logged in but you were not getting responses from the said table 1 names

We then took several post to establish you were writing to them and not trying Video chat invites.

I then posted several pics to show how to get a Buddy List to be displayed (as it is easier to be sure you are starting a Video Chat from a green icon).

I posted on the 2nd Aug a set of pics that start with President Obama followed by a "waiting for " message and then a failed Chat pic.

You said (6th Aug) that it just said waiting ...

I confirmed this with the Waiting Pic again.

I also asked if your router was doing UPnP ?

You confirmed it was.

I then asked you to check the Mac Firewall and IF On did it list several needed bits for Messages and that Stealth was not on.

You stated IMAgent was not in the list and the Stealth was Off

(End of Page 2)

I then gave the path to the IMAgent app which took several posts to get across.

On the 9th Aug I suggested Safe Mode

You did this but it did not seem to improve things.

I suggested limiting the Bandwidth (As it was not done Earlier apparently)

You said a Buddy now said you didn't appear to have a camera.

I posted that you should check the Video Menu for Camera Enabled (It may say Video Chat Enabled)

And the View Menu for the Show Statuses

You could not spot the View Menu so I posted a Pic.

You confirmed that these were enabled.

On the 17th August I suggested you try logging in to the AIM Settings page as this may tell you (Alert or Warning messages) something about your account. (Possibly being suspended)

(End of page 3)

Page 4 so far includes several posts by you confirming that you had logged in on the AIM Settings page

(Another poster also joins in at this time).

So far it appear you have an AIM valid name that can log in with iChat and with the AIM Settings site and has nothing "wrong" with that is bring up any Alert messages anywhere

You cannot Video.

We have made sure the app and support parts are listed in the Firewall

We have checked the router is doing UPnP

We have Restarted in Safe Mode (Sometimes useful for restarting the Camera if an app has "lost" where it is).

You are not getting a Failure Log or the Pop up that would normally be seen.

NEXT

I would try a PRAM reset.

Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT (⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

It is possible that some "protection feature" of your router may be getting in the way but I would have expected a Log to appear for that to be confirmed.

I like taking things step by step to make things easy as possible, I am answering the qustions you are asking and will try to add as much detail as I can. I restarded the PRAM and nothing has changed yet, it still loads even if the other person answers. I am answering what you are asking and not putting so much information because im not so "Pro" at these type of things. I would like to resolve this probelem, so far my port is on 443, AIM setting page did not send me any "suspenssion" messages or in that type, and it seems that my computer has all the right setting on, is there anything else you can suggest in this point? Thank you for youre time and work, i greatly appreciate it.

HI,

Quit Messages if open.

Open Terminal.

Copy and Paste the bold text below into Terminal.

/Applications/Messages.app/Contents/MacOS/Messages -errorLogLevel 7

Hit Enter.

This will cause Terminal to launch iChat and create alog of what is going on.

When the Buddy Lists have loaded the Log will pause and disply lines like this.

170453.296242 CommNAT result:

CNAT_ISPATHOST ..... 0

CNAT_TRYPRESERVE ... 0

Hi,

The Speed (Bandwidth info) looks fine and is more than adequate.

The Camera can be "seen" on your system as can the Mic.

Your LAN IP is 10.0.0.2

I would be interested to know what router this is ?

The CommNAT info says you are Blocking the IP (0 = No/False and 1 = True/Yes)

And also blocking the Port.

I hope this is not an Thomson-Alcatel device
