Retina Macbook display problems

New Retina Macbook arrived today - all was going well until last hour or so. Since then the display freezes after about 5 minutes use - sometimes with glitchy artefacts on screen, sometimes not. Generally it either:

1. Seizes up - the pointer may still move around but everything else is completely frozen. Sometimes the pointer freezes too (I think). I then have to hold down the Power button to force a reboot

2. Screen goes black suddenly, then auto reboots with a warning screen and propmt to 'press any button'

The only thing I can think I have done to it in the last hour or so is install Nvidia's CUDA drivers - could this be the problem? I am thinking so. But I have also managed (inbetween crashes) to remove the following files:

/usr/local/cuda

/System/Library/Extensions/CUDA.kext

/System/Library/StartupItems/CUDA

If anyone can advise if there are further CUDA files to remove / replace I think that might be a start.

I wish I knew about this thread before I tried to install Avid MC 5. I've got the mac running by forcing it not to use Intel HD 4000 Graphics, and I'm doing a time machine backup of everything, after I removed every trace of Avid I could find. I'll be following Steven's advice and doing a full hard-drive wipe and re-installing Lion. Hopefully I don't have to get a new MacBook Pro.

Has anybody tried Avid MC 6 on the MBP Retina yet as an alternative?

After installing Avid Media Composer 5.5 on my new MBP Retina Display my system went all wonky and would freeze ever 10 minutes and get some really crazy graphic distortion before a system crash. Had to wipe the drive and re-install Lion. I would advize against installing any version of Avid Media Composer on a new MBP.

I was able to get the MBP Retina running properly again by erasing the Macintosh HD, and reinstalling Lion (which cannot be done on a MBP Retina whilst on a wireless WPA2 Network, like a university or office network). Time machine backup and restore works, so you don't have to start from scratch.

Colao, I'll still try out the trial of Avid 6 before I purchase a copy, because well... I bought this laptop for gaming & video production. I hope it doesn't have the same problem. I don't expect it will, because Avid 6 is designed for 64bit systems, such as OSX Lion, and Avid 5.5 is for 32bit, such as OSX Snow Leopard.

I'll keep this thread posted on whether it works or not.

Hey Ryan,

Have you made any progress on this? I am having the same problem on a Non-Retina 2012 Macbook Pro. I even have a new machine on order as Apple has not been able to resolve my problem I am stuck with the old machine for another 10 days until the new one comes in. I dug around the Avid website after erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Lion and I found Media Composer 5.5.4.3. I installed it and was able to do some work without any problems at first. But now the Finder is extremely slugish although other apps work fine once you get past the finder. I was hoping this was just a problem with my machine and not a larger incompatibility issue. I depend heavily on Media Composer as does my entire client base. Without the ability to run MC my $2500 machine is just a glorified web browser. Should I be canceling my order and getting an iMac instead??

Hey Orlando

Sorry, I should have posted my findings immediately, I got caught up in the steam summer sale over the weekend.

Avid MC 6.0.1 wouldn't finish installing on OSX Lion 10.7.4, as it's only supported up to OSX Lion 10.7.3, it got stuck on "Waiting for other installations to complete" for about an hour. However, I could launch it to the point where I could click trial for 30 days, which is weird when it didn't finish installing. I wasn't game to test it after that as I'll need those 30 days in 2 weeks time after my next short is shot. The one I'm working on currently has a dedicated Avid 5.5.3 system on a Mac Pro at my film school. But Avid MC 6 didn't "kill" my computer, so that's good news. It's rumoured that Avid MC 6.0.2 will support OSX Lion 10.7.4, but by then I imagine I'll receive my free version of OSX Mountain Lion and have to wait for that to be supported by Avid; catch 22. Nonetheless, it's a software issue above anything else and you shouldn't need to switch to an iMac, because that'll have OSX Lion 10.7.4 installed as well. We just have to wait for Avid to release updates for current operating system versions.

Hope that clears things up

Cheers

Ryan

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the prompt reply. This whole compatibility issue is still kind of baffling to me and makes me suspect the machine itself. I forgot to mention that at the Post house where I work we are running Media Composer 5.5.3 on iMacs running Lion 10.7.4 without any problems. The Macpros running 10.7.3 are the ones that run into minor glitches, but nothing that will completly kill the machine!

I have the exact same issue, bought the maxed out one on launch and was one of the first to receive it. I tried deleting the disk, the OS, downgrading to lion, I did the HW test and got the 40000000 thing, I have the (NVDA) kernel panic. What does this mean?

This means your system is screwed up beyond repair, apple didn't check their macs before shipping them probably because they did not have time to meet their demand. They know about this and I bet they have no idea how to handle it other than replacing and fixing 1,000's of units. It's a waste because I got 2 thunderbolt displays on top of that, I emailed tim cook about it along other higher ups at apple. They don't care and they will not listen to you. I have warned people on the site I run about this issue. I am NOT happy with apple and I feel I threw $6000 on the garbage.

My mac runs slower than a 1990's notebook every time I open a low graphics game my screen freezes with my cursor being the only thing alive REALLY? for 4,000$ you can get 2 razer blades and run 2 of those games on ultra, certainly something not to expect from a company that makes billions each quarter and having the highest paid CEO and the highest prices in the stock market.

I come here not only because all the calls I've made to apple end up in people with no idea what they are doing that ask me to troubbleshoot the device first. I demand a replacement at least with some compenstion, thanks to this I have had troubble compleating my job and running my business that I shoud be charging apple for the money i've lost thanks to the work that has been lost in those crashes.

If you have the same issue, no matter what you do, you will NOT fix it unless apple fixes it.

Good Game apple.

Well there is something wrong with your machine without a doubt. If I were you I would be at Genus bar right now.

I have retina 2.3/16/256 as well. Fastest machine I've ever worked since 2000. I have Mac Pro 6-core model 2011 with 8G RAM and my machine bits it every time I do something on both of them. (they are not not comparable on paper but MBP it's so fast and responsive because of the flash storage)

I have Ubuntu Server 12.04 running always on VMware and also playing game (just COD 4) and had no problem.

This story you told, it's not MBP retina it's a faulty machine. Not a software or driver issue, it's a hardware (logic board or sth else). Go and fix it or if you can replace it with another one.

Good luck.

So I am assuming you are having Avid issues as well. Since the last time I posted here I've had Apple send me a new machine. As far as a can ascertain from research in various forums the new MacBook Pro Will NOT run Media Composer 5.X.X at all. It is a little disturbing since most shows I worked on since the summer have not made the move to 6.0. Well, for what it's worth I downloaded the MC 6.0 demo and that runs fine

Came across this post and thought I would chime in here,

I am running a lalte 20013 MBP Retina 15" on Media Composer 7.0.3 using Mavericks 10.9.1. Been editing on Media Composer for 17 years. It is an awesome tool, but does require more legwork before upgrading software and/or hardware. Always check before doing opperating system upgrades. They work hard to keep up with everything, but they aren't perfect. Nobody really is these days as it is competitive and ever changing. Doing your homework will save you time and money.

Before doing any Avid install or upgrade you need to check with the compatability:

Also visit the forums as a lot of info is shared here with links and such from development team and users:

Side notes about my system. I connect to an Apple thunderbolt display 27" as my main work screen with external keyboard and desktop speakers (monitors). Also connect a smaller display from my HDMI port for viewing full screen playback. Use my laptop screen for emails and such. It requires some minor settings adjustments to make using HDMI port work properly for full screen playback. This is more of an 'offline' solution as to get correct colors to a viewing monitor you need to use an I/O box such as from Black Magic or AJA. Also your monitor should be professional and calibrated if finishing/color grading for broadcast and such. I have my second main suite in an office that I sit and work with clients. This is running off a mac pro with Avid Nitris for I/O with pro and client monitor setup. MC 7.0.3 on Mavericks 10.9.1 as well. But most of my work is finished with specialists even then.

Hope all this helps you.

Thanks
