2012 Macbook Pro with retina display won't recognize my External Hard drive.

I have 2 Macbook Pro's, a 2009 and this brand new one I got today. My external hard drive is a 1 TB clickfree. It has worked for months on my old Mac but when I plug it into my new mac it doesn't even show up in finder or disk utility. I tried the USB ports with another device and they work fine. So it isn't a hard ware issue. The cables are USB 3.0. The external hard drive model number is HD2037N3.

I have tried taking everything off (huge pain) and reformating the drive and still it doesn't recognize it!

Can someone offer me help onto how I can get my Mac to recognize it?

This might be of interest;

Have a external Western Digital MyBook 1TB that just stopped working one day - stone dead symtom. It has Firewire400 (which I used), USB and eSata ports. Hopeful that the disk inside would still be intact, I went and purchased a HDD docking station with USB 3.0. I went for the USB 3.0 version, because I was also upgrading my computer from the first Macbook Pro (Intel) to the mid-2012 Macbook Air.

When the stuff arrived, I tried out the docking station on my old Macbook Pro - this worked excellently, and I was much happy to have my data back.

Moving to my new mid-2012 Macbook Air, the drive didn't work at all. I could hear it spin up, but nothing more happened. It did not appear in the disk utility list, nor in the system info. Tried all solutions mentioned; reset PRAM, et cetera.

I had an idea, and plugged it into my USB2.0 hub where I have my keyboard and mouse connected to my Air, and guess what - the drive works...

So we can pretty much sum it up to some USB 3.0 related issue.

More detailed info:

The docking station seem to be some generic chinese stuff, unfortunately, but the box text says; Computex Taipei (no other logo; this might just be some award they won), and "Hard Drive Dock Pro" is the name of the device. It's a 2,5" or 3,5" SATA HDD dock. Bought it from a Swedish retailer, and here is the product page;

The exact name of the HDD is Western Digital WD10EACS - 00ZJ80 (or --B0) from 30 nov 2007, and it's a 1TB Green Power drive.

I'm confused just a bit - have you tried your USB 2.0 hub with your USB 3.0 port in your 2012 model? If so, can you mount the drive using the hub? I know that there's a problem with USB 3.0 port to USB 3.0 storage devices - but some people have apparently have them working (I've seen a couple of posts to that effect).

It also seem that there are more problems reported here, anyway, with WD devices. I have yet to see a post from someone with a 2012 model and a USB 3.0 WD device that is working. Have you considered calling on of the 'Mac' providers such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3.0 drives that they can testify to work with the 2012 USB 3.0 port models?

I'm just curious...

Clinton:

Exactly. I mount the hard drive that sits in the USB3.0 SATA dock on my mid-2012 Macbook Air using a USB 2.0 hub, connected to the left USB-port.

Afaik; both ports are USB 3.0 (atleast according to the Features-page on apple.com) so I haven't tried switching them around.

My computer is a Macbook Air 13" i7.

Even though I won't get near the speeds I hoped for, I'm still happy that it "works" and that I can access the data on my new computer... 🙂

Probably not gonna call around - I'll just sit happily and wait for a fix. 😉

Hi Guys,

My MBP Retina Display came in the other day and i had the exact same problem. My Seagate 1TB HDD wouldn't show up on the new MBP but was working perfectly on my old one. I'm not sure if this would work for anyone else because it was completely a fluke for me but i tried everything else and it wouldn't work, However when i connected it back to my old MBP and backed up more stuff on there and tried connecting it back to my new MBP it started working. Not sure why it wouldn't work in the first place. Hope it works for others.

i tried this on mac pro(tower), it was recognised but when i plugged it into my MBPR it was still not detected.

that sounds like an elaborate daisy chain but you mentioned you are not getting ideal speeds, so most likely you are getting USB 2.0 speeds because your Hub is 2.0 therefore anything connected to it will also run at 2.0

as for mr Clinton my external HDD is a Toshiba Canvio 3.0 750GB and its a little sad to say that Toshiba doesnt believe in drivers as i have not been able to find any for this product. still waiting to see if the mt. lion developers build will fix this issue for other before i take the leap

I am using a my passport 1TB USB3 drive, when I plug it into the USB3 port on my MBPR it shows the blinking light and starts spinning, but finder will not recognize it.

If I then try the same HD on the left USB3 port it appears in finder and works fine. I am not really sure why one port is working and not the other, but at least the USB3 works on someof the MBPR.

So, I'm assuming the issue you're having is the right USB 3 port?

With your drive not plugged into any USB port, unplug the actual drive from the USB 3 cable. Next, plug the USB cable into the right port. Then plug the drive into the USB 3 cable.

I had an issue with a WD My Passport Essential USB 3.0 drive showing as USB 2.0 in the right port. I performed the above and it showed up as 3.0 and still shows that way. I found the solution here.

Confirmed!

Switching USB-port did the trick!

-> Moved my USB 2.0-hub to the right port

-> Plugged the HDD USB 3.0 dock to the left port

Drive is detected and works!

Checked System Information, and it says the following:

USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus

- MassStorage Device

Thanks a bunch, keg55! =)

Hi Solorboy123, it's not just the MBP 2012 that has this problem, my MBP 2011 17" connected to external drive via ExpressCard34 with USB3.0 ports has the same problem too.

Basically System Report would identify the drive under "USB Super-Speed Bus" but the drive just doesn't mount in Finder or not even found in Disk Utility.

I wish I had different USB3.0 ports to switch around like on the new MBPs, but I'm stuck with the two USB3.0 ports on the ExpressCard34.

2012 Macbook Pro with retina display won't recognize my External Hard drive.
