mail tries to delete emails on hotmail account

when i open mail on my mini mac it tries to delete all my emails in my hotmail account over a week old. but hotmail does not delete theminstead it moves them to a pop3 folder. but because they are no longer in my inbox i loose all my emails on my iphone.

any help wold be great i just cannot find the setting to change to stop this from happening
