computer wont connect to internet at coffee shop

I have a macbook pro 10.6.8 and it works perfectly. I am able to connect to the internet anywhere except at a coffee shop! I've tried everything from deleting/editing any connections/passwords/settings that you can. Turning off and on the airport, updating the computer, deleting the system configuration folder, manually adding a location and/or new IP address. Nothing works! please help

If the coffee shop is providing an open network (no password requirement), it may still be possible that they are using a wireless network that is broadcasting a 2.4 GHz network using wide-channels (40 MHz) for better bandwidth performance. If so, your Mac's AirPort wireless cannot connect because it only supports the narrow-channels (20 MHz) in this radio band.

Sorry about that. So my computer picks up all the wireless networks available in the area, but then fails to connect to the open one (no password) and exclamation signs appears over the signal strength symbol after a while. This only happens in the coffee shop, I am able to connect at home, school, airports, etc. I've tried the assistant/diagnostic and nothing. In addition to the things I mentioned in my original post. Thanks!

The AirPort icon with an exclamation mark over it is basically telling you that your Mac is unable to get an IP address from the wireless router at the coffeeshop. Now the reason why is what is perplexing. Everything I could recommend, it looks like you have already tried without success.

You did say that you were able to connect to this particular network in the past and that you have already deleted the this Wi-Fi connection in both System Preferences > Network and the OS X KeyChain ... correct?

Drag it to trashcam,

Dear God, TRASHCAM... another idiot post typo. You can really tell I only post in the middle of the night, can't you...

Anyhow I'm still perplexed that it was working BEFORE, and now.

Now.. the only other thing else I can think of.. is that the network is using WEP, and your computer is stuck trying to use WPA.

Can you go to your system pref WiFi list...then highlight the WiFi.

Click advanced button...

What does it say for Security there for that network?

If it' not there, hit the - to add the network. Enter it's name, and chose WEP, then enter the pissword.

Now... see if that works.

Also, can you check with the owners to see what kind of encryption the network is using? Also, how many characters long is the password that it is asking for?
