Vimeo spam

I'm suddenly buried under spam asking me about about the video I posted to Vimeo (I've never posted a video anywhere). It's being addressed to every address on my account, including a couple I don't think I have ever actually used. Does this mean I've been hacked? Is there soemthing in particular I should do (e.g., virus check, etc.)

Thank you!!

You have not been hacked, nor do you have malware. I've just started receiving a bunch of those as well, on a rather obscure old e-mail address. Who knows where they got their list from, but it must be a fairly outdated source! 😀 The address in question was an old throwaway that never got used much, and hasn't been used at all in a couple years. They haven't targetted any of my other addresses.

It is possible that a Windows user who has your address in their contact list has gotten malware of some kind, or perhaps their e-mail account has been hacked. Those things happen all the time.

In terms of malware, no, it probably didn't do anything, though you should make sure all system updates are installed (Java updates in particular) to prevent possible drive-by downloads.

Most likely, it was just either an attempt to generate sales from really gullible people or a phishing attempt. Probably not the latter, since it would have tried to get your Vimeo login if that's what it was.
