How long does your iPad 3 Battery last?

Hi there,

Okay so I just got my iPad 3 yesterday after upgrading from an iPad 1 and I was just wondering how long does your iPad 3's battery last on average from a full charge? I have my mail set to manual only and my location services are all turned off. The only thing which is on is that my brightness is on full. It seems as though my iPad 3 doesn't last as long as my iPad 1.

So with all that being said, how long does your iPad 3's battery last?

Thanks, and your responses are greatly appreciated! :)

Other than the brightness setting - I use auto brightness - my new iPad is set up use like yours. I manually fetch mail and don't use location services except when needed - and that is almost never.

I get 10 hours easily out of a full 100 % battery charge, just like I did with the iPad original. My iPad has been turned on all day - I am using it now and have been since 7:15 this morning. It rarely, if ever goes to sleep as long as I am in the office using it - like today - I still have 42% left on the battery,

Okay so I've read around a bit on the internet and there are a couple of solutions I'm going to try and have already tried.

1.) I tried resetting all settings. This didn't work

2.) A fresh restore from iTunes apparently fixes the problems so will be trying this, just waiting for the firmware to download.

After it has downloaded and once I have restored it I will let you all know how it pans out :)

My iPad has been on since 8.00am it is now 9.30pm Over 13 hrs, have browsed on and of for about 3hrs and watched u tube about half hour and about 2hrs light use 100% this morning and now at 64%. Brightness is at about 60% and no heat on the back, this iPad is a replacement for one I took back that was getting hot, had a very slight yellow patch on the screen and the battery was draining horribly fast like 1% every 4mins. The battery performance between the two is astonishing I am so glad I exchanged and am now very pleased with it. There must be a reason why some drain and some hold there charge would be nice to get to the real truth about it.

Why do you have brightness set at 100%?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

Regarding the new iPad battery: Has anyone purchased a good external battery charger for theirs? I sort of want one for a couple of long flights I have coming up. I realize I can charge it during layovers, but would prefer not to be tied to the charging spot at the gate......the whole purpose of booking layovers was to get off the darned plane and stretch our legs 🙂. Also, has anyone had any experience charging the new iPad using the USB port at their seat on Delta?

So after doing a fresh restore last night and setting it up as a new iPad the battery seems to be considerably better , I have all the same settings with full brightness and only manual mail etc and the battery is lasting around 7-8 hours again just like my old iPad 1. I'm not expecting it to last as long as my original iPad because of the retina display and A5X processor etc but 7-8 hours is good enough for me for the length of time I use it a day. The only thing I am a little let down by is that Apple says its still 10 hours but I cannot agree with this as my original iPad did last 10 hours but my iPad 3 is lasting 7-8 hours as I said. Hopefully Apple will fix this in iOS6 or future firmwares

And thanks for all your help everyone, it is much appreciated.

If you do not need notifications, turn this feature off. Or go into the iPad Settings app, look for all of the apps listed on the left and selectively turn off notifications and location settings for apps you do not use often or turn off notifications completely.

Make sure Airplane mode is turned off.

If you are not using any Bluetooth devices,,make sure Bluetooth is turned off. Turn Bluetooth on only when you need Bluetooth device/s to operate.

In the Settings app, set the Auto lock timer for a short period instead of a long period. Use either the default 3 minute setting or the 5 minute setting. This will allow the iPad to go into sleep mode faster and preserve battery life.

You need to play with the iPad's brightness setting to get the iPad to a useable, but power conserving brightness level. Experimentation with this setting is key to longer battery life.

I have my brightness level set about 5/8 or so up the brightness line during the day and then I lower it to half or slightly below the halfway mark when I operate it at night.

The exception to this rule is when I am watching videos and I kick up the brightness almost fully, but not quite all the way to the right for max. Brightness when using my iPad to view movies or TV shows.

Make sure you are not leaving a lot of apps open in the background. Dbl click the Home button to bring up the multitasking bar/manager, hold down an icon with your finger then delete any background apps that you do not use on a regular basis. This doesn't delete the app rather it quits or stops the app from running in the background.

Having lots of apps running in the background can eat up battery life.

Also, try and NOT let the iPad's battery drain all the way all of the time. I let my iPad 3 drain down completely only 2-3 times a month. It's not good for the battery to always being constantly discharged.

Hopefully these tips will help you.

A few more items.

In iPad's Settings app under Mail, Calendar and Contacts, stop Mail from automatically fetching by turning Fetch New Data to OFF. iPad's Mail app will still fetch mail when you manually tap the mail icon to launch Mail.

It will no longer fetch Mail auautomatically.

OR if you need automatic fetching, have it fetch mail automatically either every 1/2 hour or hour instead of every 15 minutes if this is possible for you.

Also, if you do not Push mail or Push Notifications, you can disable these, as well.

Hope this helps.

Over all, iPad 3 has 42.5watthour battery which is almost a size of MacBook Air which it has 45watthour battery. At that point of time, it required over 30watthour battery to light up that rretina -display. Also A5x chip didn't have enough power affitioncy. I'm using iPad Air which it only has 32.4watthour battery but it does excellent job on making 10hr battery life on 100% brightneess. Also with that new A7 chip it just fast.
