Printer Setup Utility crashes when adding Epson C86

I've been printing to my Epson C86 using the Gimp driver that was automagically added when I plugged it in (EPSON Stylus C86 - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2) which prints fine.

But, I wanted to query the ink levels, which has never worked, so I downloaded the epson printer driver, in a file named epson11518.sea, installed it with the archaic quit-all-apps-then-restart installer.

Now, when I try to re-add the printer using the new "EPSON C86 Series" driver option, Printer Setup Utility crashes and the new queue is not added.

The console.log contains a lot of entries like the following, with a variety of printer models appearing where CX4600 and PictureMate do below:
2006-03-16 01:31:55.433 makequeues[345] CFLog (22): Cannot find function pointer EpsonPMPluginFactory for factory 982E5062-4FBB-11D8-958C-0030657E73B0 in CFBundle/CFPlugIn 0x11d1200 </Library/Printers/EPSON/CX4600.plugin> (bundle, not loaded)
2006-03-16 01:31:58.227 makequeues[345] CFLog (21): Error loading /Library/Printers/EPSON/PictureMate.plugin/Contents/MacOS/PictureMate: error code 4, error number 0 (Symbol not found: _UTCheckPrinterStatus5
Referenced from: /Library/Printers/EPSON/Libraries/IJEngine.framework/Versions/A/IJEngine
Expected in: /Library/Printers/EPSON/Libraries/UtilityLib.framework/Versions/AC/UtilityLib
)

Am I missing something, or are the current Epson drivers not compatible with the current MacOS X?

The crash log shows that the crash occurs while trying to load the bundle for the CX4600. Since you don't have that printer, delete that plugin from /Library/Printers/EPSON and try to add the printer again. If it keeps crashing, it may be necessary to delete more plugins. There's no harm in deleting plugins for printers you don't have.

Hope this helps.

Well, that helped clean up the log, but it looks like those entries were not causing a crash. Having removed the three plugins that were causing complaints, if I open the printer setup utility by clicking the '+' button in the Print & Fax control panel, and just wait, I get the following log entry when the "Looking for new drivers" spinny-wheel finishes:

Mar 17 13:42:34 roadkill crashdump[10305]: makequeues crashed
Mar 17 13:43:17 roadkill crashdump[10305]: crash report written to: /Users/adam/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/makequeues.crash.log

If I then add my new queue, after some disk-grinding, Printer Setup disappears and I get:

Mar 17 13:45:55 roadkill crashdump[10316]: Printer Setup Utility crashed
Mar 17 13:46:02 roadkill crashdump[10316]: crash report written to: /Users/adam/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Printer Setup Utility.crash.log

If I add the queue right away, it just reverses the order of the two crash messages.

I think you've installed an older version of the Epson driver than what came with OS X. Reinstall from the OS X DVD using the package Optional Installs.pkg.

To use the Epson driver rather than Gimp-Print, Click More Printers after clicking ADD, then select Epson USB, and finish adding.

If none of this helps, time to reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option.

I was having a similar problem with my new HP PSC 1410 (1400 series) all-in-one unit. I spent hours and hours, tried everything. HP's support pages were useless.

I have two Macs so I installed the entire HP s/w package on the other and it worked flawlessly. Then I went back and tried to compare what the difference was with the two installations.
It boiled down to this: I already had two older HP printers installed on my system - they were causing the crashing.

So here is what I did:
1. in PSU, do a "Reset Printing System". this will clear all existing printers. If not, then manually remove any printer that is already installed.
2. Remove the HP (in your case Epson) s/w package completely. I recommend a tool called AppZapper. You drag an app into it and it will clear ALL of its files.
3. Go to Library/Printers. If you see a new or different EPSON directory, remove it. (you can risk removing all Epson* directories - or move them somewhere else)
4. Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD and do a Repair Permissions
5. Reboot
6. Connect your printer and install the EPSON (or HP, or whatever) CD.

This worked for me.

HA! After one heck of a lot of fruitless messing about and finally giving up on printing from that machine until I get to reinstalling the OS, you have given me the solution to my balky Epson Printer!

Delete the HP drivers.... Now everything works.
