Hi
You can add MSN Buddies after doing this
http://allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber/
You will then be able to Text Chat only with them
Messages (when it comes In Mountain Lion) will do iMessages to iPhones and iPads and some Touches
These iMessages are to Apple IDs (or Phone Numbers) used on the Phones or iPads and some people may have used an MSN email as an Apple ID.
To be Clear - the app name is NOT iMessages.
The App will be called Messages and one thing it can do (As well as all the iChat stuff) will be to send or use the iMessage service that Apple now runs which includes syncing said messages between the iOS and the Mac you are running Messages on.
We know this as Apple released (for a time) Messages Beta which has it's own Community.

Instead of getting MSN for Macs, you can also try the free app called Adium over at http://adium.im
Adium is more extenable, you can add plugins and themes to it....
