Macbook Pro Retina runs hot while lid is closed and fans working at full speed

It happened again but I taped this time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn-eO_2gvXQ Doesn't have any sense. No chrome installed nor xcode. I checked the cpu and memory and no services are running. What should I do?

I think I saw TimeCapsule right? Is there a chance that your MBPR is doing some sort of a backup? Or maybe it has some network activity. You can turn off you WiFi and see what happens.

It should be something in Monitor Activity. I say don't beat yourself up and go to Genius Bar let them check your machine. Show them the video as well and they will do sth a bout it.

Hi unfortunately TM wasn't running nor any other programs... The monitor activity showed no programs using the CPU in a massive way so I'm confused.

Maybe it's not about the massive usage of CPU. Maybe it's because it fails to close a program or it's still using an specific service and it can't ending it. It would be helpful if you could login to your user account and show us what you have still open on you computer.

Well I think you should wait until Monday then go to Apple Store. You can play around to see what should be a problem. Start with listing applications you've installed and stuff you are using. This way you can narrow it down to what might be a reason.

By the way, no matter what you are using, it must close all programs and stop any services from running and go to sleep mode without no problem. It's a world's greatest laptop they ever made with a most professional OS in a world. How it fails with a simple browser and it goes to the kernel panic and how it can't successfully sleep.

I'm having the exact same problem with my new Macbook Pro Retina laptop. When I got home and took my laptop out of my bag, it was so hot that I could barely touch it. When I opened the screen, all of the processors were at 100% and the fans were running as fast as they could. According to iStat, the procs dropped to idle almost immediately after opening the screen. I did not stop any programs. I had to reboot my computer to get it to sleep. This has happened now 3 times in the week that I have had it. I do not run chrome, nor have I ever installed it. What a pain.

Yes, it is a real pain indeed.... Worst thing is that I'm afraid of closing the lid and let the mac there, since I don't know if it will get hot or not so I ended up in switching it off everytime...

What did Apple care say after you called them? It doesn't sound normal or safe at all.

I just got off the phone with Apple Care. They want me to take it in to the store to have it looked at by a Genius. I probably won't be able to do this until tomorrow or Friday. Other than resetting the "pram", which I didn't want to do, they had no other suggestions. He didn't think the reset would help either since the computer was so new.

I got the same answer (IT) but unable to bring it to the AS in these days.

Anyone that's having this problem storing their Macbook Pro in close proximity to an iPad with smart cover? I originally though this problem was due to the Mountain Lion beta, but I had this problem on two Retina MacBook Pros so far. The second happened 3 hours after taking it out of the box. No Chrome or X-Code

I'm having the exact same issue, i've experienced it three times so far...Closing the lid at work, disconnecting the power cord and then putting the Mac in my bag...When i get home it's smoking hot and running at full CPU...

Apple needs to address this issue quite quickly before the CPU or another piece of hardware decides to call it quit...

I've joined this unhappy club - same symptoms (close lid, put it bag, go home, find preheated pizza stone

inside). I did have Chrome - but wasn't running when this occurred. I used to love being able to just put

the machine to sleep by closing the lid and waking up ready to go right where I left off. It would often be weeks, or even months between a hard reboot. Having to reboot every time I use it is going to be a real pain.

I found something that seems like it may part of the problem. I have time machine backups, normally to a disk that I attach via USB. I find that today, while the machine was supposed to be sleeping it supposedly made

several backups, including one just before I got home and found it scorching hot. So what, exactly, was it backing up to? (I assume the spare space or even trying to put it into the cloud) and why does backup scheduling overide user defined sleep?

My hopeful solution (we will see) is to select the option to NOT backup while on battery power. Now I will keep fingers crossed that it no longer wakes up and gets hot and bothered (I love my machine, but we're not

*that* close). It used to be that it never tried to backup until the correct external disk was attached, but that

doesn't seem to be an option any more.

MacBook Pro Retina with Chrome left open and X-Code installed but not running. I have been either closing lid or Apple>Sleep but the fan runs with heat pumping out. Tonight I closed the lid with a full charge leaving the laptop on my table and left home for a few hours, so no apple light and no other lights. I did notice heat coming from the fans as I packed up but thought it was residual. When I returned the laptop was cool to touch but battery was down to 2%, *** Apple? I expect some battery loss when in sleep but this is ridiculous.
