Thanks very much for the advice, I like your 'logic'! I spoke to Apple, using your reasoning and they agreed to replace the logic board under the scheme. This is a great relief and I am (finally) impressed with Apples customer relations and willingness to take responsibility.
Great to have access to this discussion, it has proved a vital help.

I had this same problem last summer , they said the PMU had burned out and the logicboard needed replacing. It cost me around $450. Now it seems to be the same thing again , about a year later. it seems like a lot of people seem to to be having this problem. Maybe Apple should look into expanding the logic board problem. One thing I thought a little strange was that both times it happened to me it was right after apple updates had been installed. This time I restarted it, it came back up, but went black at the first screen saver as i was talking to someone when it came back up. I really can't afford to buy anew laptop at the moment or put the money into this one especially if it's going to be a yearly thing. I haven't tried the squeezing the left side of the track pad yet , hopefully that will work so i can get some data off the hard drive. I've been a Mac user for many years. This was my first laptop. I'm very disappointed.

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago, and have only gotten to talk to one Apple support tech since; they didn't hold out a lot of hope, and I haven't tried to get in touch with Customer Relations yet. Ironically, I had just shut down the iBook to boot into Target Disk mode, so that I could copy some videos from my Mom's iMac G5 to burn to DVD. Growf. So far, none of the tricks have worked, but the battery does take a charge when the iBook is plugged in. Since this is the fourth motherboard (having been replaced just after the warranty ran out this spring, thanks to Customer Relations), I'm now looking to upgrade the hard drive and replace the battery and power adapter for my old Blueberry OG iBook.

There is a 90-day warranty on the logic board repair. If you haven't already passed that date, get in touch with them before it does.

If I were in your position, I would ask Customer Relations to replace the iBook, since it has been repaired four times and still doesn't work. Once in awhile they will do that when one has failed over and over.

Good luck.

I am having the same problem just recently.
i can't get it to do anything, not even power on.
but i did the squeeze trick and it did turn on in target disk mode and I was able to get stuff off of it i needed to save.
have not been able to get it back on since.

and now that I have thought more about the symptoms the recall fix describes. there was a point not long ago at which video was rediculously difficult to play correctly and would freeze, but by then i didn't need it for nothing more than web and basic tasks. I dismissed it as getting old.

but i fear that i have missed the 3 year mark by a couple of months..... 😟 ofcourse.
imma go to an apple store and see if they will take pity, its not my fault that it didn't decide to go out so badly until now........
