Safari hangs on so many webpages. Why?

Using Safari Version 2.0.3 (417.9.2) in OS 10.4.5 on a 1.67 ghz AL PowerBook.

How come Safari hangs on just about all pages. I go to a page, watch the blue progress in the URL address area and the progress hangs so often just before the blue progress disappears indicating fully loaded. Sometimes the blue will never finish. And I'm not sure what is not loading on the page itself.

When this hang happes, I'll launch Firefox and go to the page that hangs in Safari, and Firefox loads the whole page so quickly. Switch back to Safari and it's still just hanging. After sometimes minutes, the blue progress competes.

Anyone else experience this? Or knows why Safari does this?

Hi again Martin

1)
By Safari hangs, we mean an interminable spinning polychrome wheel that renders Safari unresponsive to anything other than Force Quit.

2)
Also, when you hardwired your Powerbook by ethernet cable, did you wire into the AirPort Extreme base station or into your broadband modem?

I ask because of a parallel with an ongoing issue at
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=464992&tstart=0
When my computer is hard wired in to the AirPort Extreme base station, there is a problem connecting to streaming video (from the BBC via its News Player).
When my computer is hard wired into the DSL modem, there's no such problem
