Does Mac Pro mini displayport carry audio?

I have a Mac Pro that was purchased in December of 2009. Does the mini Displayport carry audio in addition to video?

if you have a Mac Pro 5,1, then yes, I think it does carry video and audio

5x70 cards (on 2010 mac pros and beyond) pass audio on their mini-displayports. I assume they will also on a 2009 mac pro.

2009 mac pro's with ATI Radeon HD 4870 or NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 I believe do not pass audio through the mDP.
