Export Mac Mail folders and emails to Outlook for Mac

I have Mail 5.1 with a lots of really organized folders full of emails.

I want to use Outlook 2011 now.

I got both on my computer.

I am already receiveing my new emails on Outlook (as on Mail btw).

Is there a way to transfer automatically the folders and emails from Mail to Outlook?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hello, see if this helps...

To import an MBOX file into Outlook 2011 for Mac:

  1. Copy the .mbox file to your Mac. A USB flash drive or an external hard drive is probably the easiest way to do that.
  2. On your Mac, in Outlook 2011, select "Outlook 2011 -> File -> Import" menu command.
  3. Select "Contacts or messages from a Text file" option.
  4. Click on 'Continue' (Right arrow button).
  5. Select "Import messages from an MBOX-format text file".
  6. Click on 'Continue' (Right arrow button)
  7. Select the MBOX file(s) you'd like to import.
  8. Click on "Import" button.
  9. Click on "Finish" button.
  10. You will find the imported mailboxes under "ON MY COMPUTER". (Note: If "ON MY COMPUTER" section is in collapsed mode, click on the triangle next to it to expand it).

If you see that MBOX files are greyed out in the "Import Mail" window (Step 7 above)

  1. Download this application to the Mac.
  2. Double-click to unzip it.
  3. Double-click on the unzipped file "mbfr".
  4. Point it to the folder where your MBOX files are located.
  5. After that restart Outlook, and you should be able to select MBOX files in the "Import Mail" window.

I'm trying to do the same thing, only import into Entourage (2008) rather than Outlook (2011). The mbox folders created by Mail 6 are not recognized by Entourage when attempting to follow the instructions given here. Most of the information I find is about how to migrate FROM Microsoft to Apple Mail, unfortunately. I'm still searching for a solution. If you find one, please post it here! 🙂

Strictly mbox are files and not folders. Mbox files are text files with messages one after the other. It is unfortunate that Mail (which is not mbox based) gives its folders mbox extensions.

If you are trying to import to a client which expects mbox files you can use Mail's Archive facility to generate mbox files from Mail folders. The Archive facility produces a folder containing a traditional mbox file and a table_of_contents.

I know nothing about Entourage or Outlook but I would be interested to know if this overcomes your problem.

I discovered this as well, and I think it will ultimately solve the problem, but with some effort as each individual mailbox file that Mail exports must first be converted to a readable txt file (converted by word) and then imported individually into Entourage, rather than selecting them all at once and having the process work in the background. I have exported all the Mail to this format and tested a mailbox file or two and it worked, so now I will begin the process of working through all of the files in this way. (I want to retain over 10 years of messages and multiple mailboxes in the same directory tree as before, which is a pretty big job.)

Perhaps if I were a good programmer I could figure out a script or something to automate the process, but I think I'm better off just to go through the repetitions.

Thanks for responding!

You can export all folders at once from Mail by selecting the top folder but, as far as I can tell, it puts all mbox files in one folder without any internal structure.

I am not sure what you are doing with Word - Mail's archived mbox files are already readable text files and if they were not it would be unwise to use a non-clean editor such as Word to play with them.

If I remember correctly some people have found that they get better results by going via an alternative mail client (such as Thunderbird) which has better import and export facilities.

Hmmm - well I am using Mail 6 (mountain lion), not sure if that makes a difference. The mail I am exporting is 'on my computer' (originally imported to Mail 6 from Eudora - and then continued to be used to store messages moved from inbox. The Mail account was set up as an IMAP account in case that makes a difference. I should have done POP from the start, but I know everyone says IMAP is better (sync multiple devices). It's just not working well for me though. The exported mail does in fact appear with all the folder structure in tact, which is what I want. You have to be sure to click - export sub-folders - on the export command in Mail.

Mail's archived mbox files were readable text files in text-edit, but they were not readable in Eudora when I wanted to import them (greyed out). By opening in word, saving as plain text with a .txt extension, they became readable. All the messages in each mailbox appeared just fine in my test. I really want to use Entourage - many don't like it but it has a lot of features that work well for me in terms of my work flows.

Thanks for your comments! I'll let you know the final result of my migration.

Let me refresh this post, I am actually wanting to migrate from Apple Mail to Thunderbird -- mostly for Enigmail, secured e-mail not implemented in Apple's new version of Mail.

Problem : how can I import these boxes? I see well the architecture, but the button "Import from Apple Mail" in options seems obsolete (nothing was imported after the wizard).

Does anyone has a solution?

Thanks,

It is unlikely that Mail has stopped supporting SSL. The following help page is from Mail on Leopard. Does it help?

If you are determined to use Mozilla you may wish to look at my SeaMonkey page at: http://links.zero.eu.org/seamonkey/

There are several ways to import mail into Thunderbird or SeaMonkey but more information is required. Do you use POP or IMAP? How many mail folders do you have?
