How do I get Siri to spell unusual names, for example, Merrie (Siri spells Mary even when Merrie is in her contact info) or Jon (vs John when Jon is in the contact info)?

There are three 'unusal' names I often use: Sean vs. Shawn; Merrie vs. Mary; and Jon vs. John. Even though the appropriate spelling is in the contact info Siri accesses, Siri uses the 'traditional' spelling in the voice text/voice email? Is there a solution? Can Siri be 'coached'?

Try this (example: Sean):

  1. Open the contact with Sean's name
  2. Tap Edit (at the top)
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Add Field
  4. Tap Phonetic First Name
  5. Type Shawn in the box (the exact spelling that Siri is using now)
  6. Tap Done

Try getting Siri to spell Sean's name and see if it works now. Assuming it does, repeat the process for the remaining names.
