Adding fonts to Mail?

Right now I only have a few fonts showing up in Mail - some Helvetica, Monaco, Osaka and Verdana.

I was wondering, how can I add some more fonts, and which fonts are pretty much assured to be fonts most Mac and Windows recipients would have?

Thanks,

doug

I'm sorry to hear that. My only thing that comes to mind is it might be tied to a different font collection on your machine so you might check that.

Oh, and an earlier thought I had. Right before I installed 10.8 I ran DIsk Utility (did I mention this?), it found a number of problems. I thus needed to start in safe mode to have if fix my hard drive. That I could see at possibly the problem you are having. So tun DIsk Util and see what happens - it certainy will not hurt.

Gentlemen - the Olympics will have to wait as I just saw this and was hoping beyond hope to see a solution to my own problem that I have researched for at least a year on goodness knows how many Mac forums with no positive results. My problem is a little different in that I have no fonts - zilch - showing up in my font list, so I cannot change my note font - period. I can change the size and colour of the font (Ariel), no problem there. I work primarily in Photoshop and Illustrator but do not use a font manager (probably should) so that's not the problem.

I have been a Photoshop user for over a decade and it is only about a year ago that the list just vanished. I have added fonts over time - have to in my line of work, but have never deleted any so could not have inadvertently done some damage that way.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion when it launched and hoped that the problem would be resolved with the new OS, but not a bit of it - the list is still empty. You might be puzzled in that if I use Photoshop to make my meagre living, why do I not know how to fix this? I am not a graphic designer, but I do conceptual art and so digital painting is really my thing, not so much anything involving fonts.

I have run disk utility, validated everything that needed validating, emptied caches. You name it, I did it and still no fonts showing up. So Mr. Lerner... at least you have "some." I have none. 😟

Cheers

Doug, I have the same problem with very few fonts in Mail, and no way to add others. The problem began several OS X iterations ago, and has persisted with each system update.

I wonder how many Mac users are in the same boat, and why Apple (starting with the discussion admin) doesn't chase down the cause.

Frustrating problem, and I'm typically a happy Mac user who actually likes Mail as an app.

Thanks,

Jim G.

Hello Doug,

I realise that I am late to the party here, but I stumbled on your post while googling the same problem. Please accept my apologies if this solution is way too obvious and you have already tried it long ago.

It did help me when experiencing the same strangely limited font list. It is almost too stupid.

I expanded it. Simple as that. There was nothing to indicate that a column was hidden, such as a scroll bar.

All the best,

Björn

I don't know whether to laugh or cry!!! I think I might have been the original person to post this problem, and that was after 6 months of not being able to find my font list, and then more than a year of posting. Had it, and one day it just vanished. I posted and posted to no avail. Finally got around it by customising my toolbar for formatting and which was not set up properly. However... sitting here minding my business doing something else when I saw the notification re your post.

BRILLIANT! But I feel like such a total and complete village idiot because I never ever thought of even trying to see if there was anything in hiding. All it took was a little drag and BINGO! My year + long problem is now history!

Thinking I should probably be drummed out of the corp 🙂

THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH!!! Yes - that's shouting... but good shouting... hip hip hooray!!!

Hi Bjorn,

I discovered your post here thanks to Google and clicked the "Like" button immediately, so grateful was I that your suggestion solved an issue that had been bothering me for days (Berylium? Chaucer? Chopin Script? but no Verdana or Helvetic Neue - what's up with that?!).

Yet somehow, leaving things at a simple "like" seemed a stingy way to salute people like you who take the time to share such solutions in the first place. So, despite my being a long-time non-joiner and non-commentator in the forum world, I just created an ID and signed up expressly to write this note of thanks. All the Best, Tara

My question is How do I get these fonts where they need to go so I can use them while typing an e-mail? I've gone to Applications-Font Book and all of my fonts have been installed on my laptop. I can use them when I'm typing a Word document but not when I'm typing an e-mail in Safari. There I only have a choice of about 5 fonts. How can I get access to all the fonts that are already installed in my computer in e-mail?

Thanks!!
