APERTURE 3.3 GENERATING THUMBNAILS

What is going on here? I upgraded to the new aperture 3.31, and I have been stuck "generating thumbnails" for 5 days now. Admittedly I have a lot of photos (over 250k) but it is supposed to be a professional product, and not freeze me out of effectively using my . Is anybody else having this problem? Luckily I use Capture One for my professional photography. I have always had previews enabled, and even now, it seems as though the thumbnails are working.

Hey There, Had the same issue after updating to 3.3. I think I fixed it by doing two things.

1) Select all images in the library, and "Update Preview", it may take a while depending how many. I had about 60,000 images in RAW. I did the process over night and it had finished by morning.

2) "Rebuild the Database" - hold down "option" and "command" while opening Aperture. This step may take a while however I have had to do it twice, once before for another issue, it seemed to finish in a few hours. Keep an eye on the "Activity Monitor" and watch that it is processing (you can watch the reads and writes) it may say "not responding" as long as it continues to make the reads and writes let it go.

I used referenced files, as opposed to letting Aperture Manage the files. Also, I have a Quad Core i7 iMac with 16GB's RAM. My images reside on an external 3TB Seagate Drive connected by Firewire 800.

I was reluctant to do it, but the Apple Support person told me the only other suggestion was to delete all the previews and regenerate. I figured it would take days with 60,000 images so I went this route. It has been a week now and all seems fine.

I have 8 more LIbraries teh same sive that are "Managed" to upgrade to Aperture 3 and I am reluctant to do so until I need the images for something...

Good Luck!!

Hi Jack;

I did what you suggested (Update Previews and Rebuild Library) but it did not help. I did, at one point also delete all 40GB of previews and had them regenerated but it did not change anything.

My suspission is that something had to change in Aperture in handling referenced files. I did not have this issue before 3.3. I will keep trying but if it doesn't go away, I will just wait for Mountain Lion, reinstall OSX and hope it goes away then.

Jeez, I am sorry to hear that. Mine did the same thing right after the upgrade. I jsut got a new machine and it would run at a crawl when the preview would generate. Definetely a problem with the upgrade. I was not aware that it was a major upgrade or I would not have installed it. I have access to tech support, as I just purchased another copy of Aperture. I have been burning up the phone lines to Apple trying to get Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 upgrade stable, beforethe start the upgrade process on my other older machine. Jsut when I think I was there (it took 6 weeks) they through in this upgrade!! I am afraid to do it on my old iMac, because the older maching does not have near the power this machine has.

If you are on LinkedIn, I started a group called "Aperture for Professional Photographers", so that we could could share ideas if there is an issue like this. I don't know if someone there might have a suggestion.

Good Luck!!!!
