Preview not finding my ipad

I can verify this too. Was having trouble on one mac with Xcode 4.5 and iOS6 SDK, exported to a Macbook Pro, worked straight away.

I updated everything. I updated the iPad operating system and then I updated the Mac OS Lion system. Once I got Lion updated, it previewed perfected on my first generation iPad. Hooray. It only took me a day. I also made sure that I had the latest version from iBooks. Turns out, when all else fails read the instruction in the Help section of IBooks Author.

We do not have XCode installed on the MacBooks and we still get this on all but 2 or 15 computers. We have students trying to preview their Books and all systems should have the same basic configuration.

Hey, I don't understand all this stuff about XCode ..... Is there a simple step-by-step solution to fix this problem? How do I know what Xcode I have? Nothing comes up on spotlight!! Thanks!

Empirically, installing Xcode can influence the behavior of this function in iBooks Author. I would suggest installing Xcode 4.5.2 and see if iBooks Author starts to behave.

Just do the default install of Xcode. You can download from here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xcode/id497799835?ls=1&mt=12.

You don't have to run Xcode, just install it.

Wow! I tried to install, and the icon download bar just started with a dot and didn't go further. I tried again, same result. In the end I just thought I'd try it anyway, and Voila!! I don't know what happened, but it is working.

I figured out that my iMac wasn't detecting my iPad. When I turned off my iPad and then powered it up again, iTunes opened and synced the two devices. Then I was able to use the Preview feature in iBooks Author.

This worked for me
