iPhoto to Aperture

How do I either export my iPhoto library into Aperture or import it from iPhoto. I suspect I have to export it to a folder on my desktop. Maybe someone knows a one-step process?

Upgrade to iPhoto 9.3 and Aperture 3.3 and they will use the exact same library. No import necessary.

Leonie, Apt works fine this morning. 🙂 My activity monitor (which I've become very familiar with so it's on my dock) had always showed a good GB free space but it didn't matter! Even with mail and Safari and Apt open now it still shows almost 2 MB free. Right clicking won't immediatly bring me to "show originals" but I don't have time right now to remember how to get there, but last time I did I had no problem "finding" originals....

Great. Good to know 🙂

My activity monitor

That is a very useful utility, but in this case I meant Aperture's built in "Activity Viewer" (from Aperture > Windows > Show Activity). That is aso very useful, for it will show you what exactly Aperture is trying to do, when it is spinning its beachball.

I just moved the new libraries into it and then deleted them from my main Apt library and my computer's HD.

Rick, this may become problematic, when the disk gets full. You know that Time Machine will write backups, until the drive fills, and only then it will start to delete earlier backups and free space. You risk Aperture and TimeMachine fighting for space. Also you will not be able to include the Aperture Library into your Time Machine backup.

Partitioning the drive would restrict Time Machine to a fixed amount of space and leave a fixed amount for your Aperture Library.

Thanks, Leonie, I understand your reasoning and can imagine running out of space eventually. For me, that sounds like years away. 🙂 But, my not phisically/literally knowing how to "partition" my drive, I spose it'll have to wait until my son gets here some day...

The "looks" of my additional libraries on my external HD are not the best anyway cuz of how I accidentally put "Heloise" and "Germany" into folders -- another thing my son might be able to straighten out. Just too bad he only visits once a year. 😟 (I had intended to have one library called "Weddings" with Heloise, Bryan, Kristi as separate projects in it.)

Oh well, if you can talk me through "partitioning" it, go ahead, unless I already have it "partitioned" if you can tell from this picture: User uploaded file

I don't know about Heloise, but your "Apt. Library (Germany)" probably looks like a folder because of the "." in the filename. I'd rename it to "Apt_Library_Germany", that would be saver. The parts of the filename following a dot may be interpreted as file extension and specify the type of a file, and that may confuse the Finder.

To partition a drive: Could your son listen in with Skype, while you try that?

I assume your MacOS is Lion, version 10.7.4, right?

Then you should be able to partition your Time Machine drive without loosing the data on it, but create a copy of your Aperture libraries before try it, and make sure, you can open those copies.

To partion a drive you connect it and launch Disk Utilitiy. It is in Applications > Utilities. You should see a window like this:

User uploaded file

In the left pane you see your disks. Select the one that you want to partition, then select the partition on this drive, that should be split in two, in the above example, the partition "Hermione Media" on my 1 TB disk.

In the right pane click the tab "Partition". In the "Partition Layout" click the partition to be split, here "Hermione Media". Now you should see a blue selection frame. The lower right corner is a resize handle. Drag it to make the partition smaller; in your case, until the size is 1 GB. When the partition is small enough, click the "+" button to add a second partition; resize it also to 1 GB, so that both partitions together fill the disk. Enter a name for the new partition in the textfield. Make sure the format control is set to MacOS Extended Journaled. Then press "apply".

Now you should have a second partition for your media and can quit Disk Utility.

Then you can copy your Aperture libraries to the new partition.

Yes, "Heloise" is only an empty folder, all those pictures are in the "WEDDING-Heloise" library. The "Apt.Library (Germany)" is really confusing cuz I have a "Trash" library in it along with the "Germany" library. 😟 Maybe I can rename them or maybe I'll just need to somehow move them?

What you say about "partitioning" I can almost follow, and yes my son could screen-share to help me with it, but it's rather unnerving to imagine trying to "copy" all the libraries before I do that because it would take days!!!
