headphone jack is only emitting right sound.

The headphones work properly, the headphone jack doesnt. What should I do?

Honestly, you just took a huge load off my mind. Thank you so much! When I started realizing I wasn't hearing left side sounds on my MacBook Air, instead of googling it like a normal person, I just kept avoiding it in case there was something wrong with my computer that would cost me money. I finally just did it after months and this came right up as the third result and you solved it and it was all ridiculously easy. I'm feeling pretty silly now but thank you for the help!!!

Whoa - where did you get this information? And what did you do to fix it? This is exactly what just happened to me, and it wasn't until I saw your post about it being a VGA/Thunderbolt adaptor that anything made sense to me. I was just hooked up to a projector this morning and now my left audio doesn't work. And none of these other "fixes" has fixed it. How can plugging something into the Thunderbolt affect the audio port?

I had a similar problem. My left earbud seemed completely silent, so I checked the balance on System Preferences/Sound. Shifting the sound balance there didn't fix anything. After trying that, I pulled up the Audio MIDI. Neither side was muted, so that wasn't the problem. Next I tried adjusting the balance using the MIDI. It fixed it immediately. I'm not sure why the balance option in the System Preferences didn't work, but if you are having this problem give the MIDI balance a try.

Had the same problem and settings or PRAM reset didn't do anything for me.
The problem must have initiated when my speakers or headphones were unplugged while in sleepmode.

Fix for me:
I started playing a song in iTunes (any audio that has stereo channels will do) and unplugged, then reconnected the headphones a few times while the audio was playing.
Somehow this switched the audio back to full stereo.

Cheers
