Also tried this numerous times, but this time my AE (1st gen) wasn't anymore accessible under Yosemite. Instead of showing up the "Apple Network xxxx" name of the AE generated wifi network, I got this "New Apple Express" detected in the finder Wifi Menu that when selected launch the new Airport Utility that doesn't work with my 1st gen AE.

The solution:

  • Use a utility to scan your wifi networks (ie wifi explorer)
  • See the Apple Network ID your AE distributes
  • Open the old Airport utility as explained elsewhere
  • Select from the Menu Install an other AE
  • Enter the Apple Network ID No password
  • Boum! you can now see your AE Now you can setup your AE to join your actual home wifi network.

Painful but it works.

Thanxx to Apple for taking care so well of his early customers. Geez.
