Startup chime audible despite headphones?

At startup, my Intel iMac always sounds the startup chime through the internal speakers, even if I have headphones plugged in. Naturally, depending on what game I was last playing, the chime can be quite loud, and is irritating when I restart while others are sleeping. This is the first Mac I've had that the startup chime was not automatically sent through the headphones if they were plugged in. Is this a "feature" or a glitch?

One side point, the headphones are stereo (two color bars), and are standard issue from Sony, however the stereo plug does not fully insert into the headphone jack. About 1/16th inch of metal rod remains visible when the headphones are completely plugged in. These are the same headphones that plug in perfectly to my former G4's front headphone jack. I was guessing the iMac's headphone jack was shortened to accommodate other styles of plugs (perhaps optical?). The headphones operate correctly, and during normal operation all sound goes through the headphones, but at startup the chime still sounds through the internal speakers.

I'd like the startup chime to go away, and am hoping it's not a hardware issue or a bad jack. I don't know if it makes a difference but the external speakers jack is just as "short" inside as the headphones jack.

Barry,

All due respect, but having the chime blast when you've got something plugged into the the speaker output is not normal behavior for a Mac -- at least not the ones I've owned. One of the traditional results from plugging something into the Mac's speaker output has always been (in my experience) to supress its internal speakers, and this is the way it's worked on two previous iMacs and two different iBooks. My new Intel iMac wants to blast out a startup chime at 5:00 a.m. even though I've got my external speakers turned off. It wakes up my entire household.

Hello Tim:

The startup chime is, to some of us, music. That is an audible signal that the Mac has performed certain startup routines and found that all is well. There are 'haxies' that will silence the chime, but I DO NOT recommend them. If the chime bothers you, I suggest that you sleep your mac instead of shutting it down (my preferred mode anyhow).

The chime using the internal speakers is normal operation, by the by.

YES! THAT is the solution. I'll post it here too so the others get it...

If the problem you're experiencing is: iMac startup chime sounds through internal speakers even though you have headphones/speakers plugged in (which would normally mute internal).

When speakers/headphones are plugged in, changing the volume changes the HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS volume. First, unplug the headphones, set the volume of the internal speakers (and startup chime) to low or off, then plug in the headphones and set the headphone volume to whatever you like. They're actually separate!

Thanks again Tom

All:

Let me try this once more. The chime has nothing to do with volume, speakers, or anything else. As I indicated above, the chime is an indication that everything has passed startup processes.

The hack above is, in my not so humble opinion, just plain dumb. To hack into operating system software is a slippery slope.

I am not posting this for people who have already made up their minds that a silly chime is a problem. I am indicating to anyone else who reads this that hacking into OS X is a very bad idea.

Barry
