My problem is the same although sometimes PDF's appear and other times no. Recently I receive an email from an airline and the paperclip appears but no attachment shows. I went to the web based site and the PDF's are there. In some emails the PDF's appear opened, sometimes with the name and size at the bottom of the message... Very strange.

I use gmail and microsoft exhange settings on the ipad to sync my gmail account.

That is a Microsoft problem with Outlook that has been a problem since day one with Outlook when sending attachments to non-Outlook users when the sender uses RTF for formatting. The winmail.dat is intended for Outlook users only. Another Microsoft closed, proprietary format.

Ask the sender to use Plain Text when sending you email which the sender can do for you only. Outlook includes an option by contact in the user's address book for the message formatting. When the default is RTF, an email sent to a contact designated for Plain Text will be sent as Plain Text and as RTF to all others.

We are sending PDF files to customers and we receiving a lot of complains from Ipad owners that did not got the attachment.
After testing we noticed that when we are sending from outlook with smtp everything works fine. But when we do it from webmail (with the same smtp settings) the attachments don't show up.

Is there a solution for this problem?

On ALL other platforms we don't have problems.

I have a Ipad 4G that is only two weeks old and this problem is already two years old?

I think I'm having the same problem. When I receieve an email with an attached file sometimes it shows in the content and sometimes as an attachment. Can't work out why this happens. When it is something I want to save eg pdf or jpg if it is inline in the content I cant save it to ibooks, photo album etc.

ASomeone suggested moving the email from the inbox to another mail folder. This actually seems to work. However i would still like to kjnow why it is happening in the first place.

You are talking about something that is not related.

All single page PDF attachments received will appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message and the same for image/photo attachments.

When connected to the internet via a cellular network, a single page PDF attachment or a photo attachment that is over a designated size will not be shown inline or viewed in place automatically. You must select and download the attachment which will then appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message.

An attachment that appears inline or viewed in place within the body of the message is not the same as being embedded. An attachment that appears inline or viewed in place in the body of the message remains an attached file. The iPad's Mail app can't change an attached file to being embedded or vice-versa. That is determined by the sender's email client.

In order to send something embedded in the message body requires composing the email in HTML. Not possible to embed anything using Plain Text for email composition.
