I'm trying to figure out whether MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2012 models have a possible GPU problem, and if they do whether it is a hardware or software driver problem.

I got another crash this morning. It happened when logging into my Mac, just like before. The display was sleeping, when I woke it up it displayed images from my screen saver (using iPhoto/Collage display style) but was frozen. Never got the login prompt.

Here is the console output:

7/4/12 9:07:09.000 AM kernel: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error

7/4/12 9:07:09.000 AM kernel: IOVendorGLContext::ReportGPURestart

7/4/12 9:07:09.000 AM kernel: 0000006e

7/4/12 9:07:09.000 AM kernel: 00200000 0000902d 00000000 00000000

7/4/12 9:07:09.000 AM kernel: 00000000 000002ac 00000003 0000000b

7/4/12 9:07:09.000 AM kernel: 00000000 00000000 01004001

7/4/12 9:07:29.000 AM kernel: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!

7/4/12 9:07:49.000 AM kernel: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!

For now I am going to disable the screen saver. WaiChung, I'm very interested to hear whether you get any GPU-related kernel panics when you get your new kit because you too have the 2012 model. If you don't, then I will head to the Apple Store.

tru6794 - these are amazing notebooks but you're right, there are teething problems with any brand new gear.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, I went to the genius bar yesterday. I need a new logic board. They said that some of the mid 2010 MBP have that issue. You might want to schedule an appointment so they can run the test to see if that is your problem...They are waiting for the part to come in for me. Hope that's not your problem, because if you don't have Apple Care, the logic board is quite expensive.

Good luck. Oh, I just noticed that you have a 2012, sorry...nevermind, probably has nothing to do with whatever you are experiencing, but I would go to the genius bar...😐

I really hope the best for you. But most likely it's a driver problem. I followed other threads with the same problem and they came to the conclusion, that's most likely a GPU driver problem. Other people changed their sets and it didn't resolve their problem. Most of them have driven the Hardware Test and there were no errors.

With Chrome, the error could usually be reproduced. With other software, it was rather random. I personally think that's a problem with the actual kernel extension. Officially the error appeared with the MacBook Air and Chrome. The MacBook Air uses also the HD4000 GPU. I do not think that all these chips are defective, so let's see what Apple will do.

Hi guys,

Whether it's a hardware or software issue, i don't get it. Why you all are talking about Apple Care!? It's a brand new first generation product. You still have a one-year warranty and if you are behind the 14-day return policy you can just replace it without any question. Am I missing sth here?

Thanks

Thanks for this thread guys. I'm a new Mac user, and have had my non-Retina MBP mid-2012 for about 3 days and have experienced similar issues with the gpu freezing or crashing the system.

I'm running on a 2.6 GHz (i7) with the 1TB HDD. Other than that it's all standard stock.

The issues I'm having seem to occur when gaming or returning from sleep mode or the screensaver.

It's inconsistant though so it's hard to pin down. Except when I attempt to boot up to a new partition with Bootcamp to install Windows 7. It seems like whichever of the video cards that would be used for that are not recognized.

I thought it might be a temperature issue, after reading other threads. It does seem to be a little hot. For example the laptop has been running for about 30 minutes and all I've done is use Safari and check for software updates. The Temp is currently 140 F.

Hi LizElwell

Heres my update:

Got my MBP on Sun. Went home and did a transfer from my old MBP again. When a message asked me to install java runtime for my CS4 and I click ok... all **** break loose again.

I decided to do a low level format, reinstall OSx 10.7.4. This time instead of transferring the complete HDD, I choose only my user profile and data. Spend few hours to install Office for Mac, Lightroom 4 and a couple of plug-ins, flash player for Safari and no problem after a few hours of using Safari and LR4.

Seems like either problems from my old MBP or Java runtime is giving me the Kernel panic problem. Let's see how it goes....

Get my fingers cross and hope nothing happens. Will update in a few days time.

Hi LizElwell,

the MBP has been running from 17 Jul till to date without any crash or kernel panic. Ran Safari, Lightroom 4 with plug-ins from Nik Soft / Onone, Office 2010, Transferred tons of photos in RAW file format, heavy usage on Sat and Sun (almost whole day) without facing any problems.

If anyone have the kernel panic on a new set, would suggest just transfer your user information and datas only. Reinstall your program again, this should get rid of the problem most of the time.
