Missing Sync for Palm

For anyone having trouble syncing a palm device with their apple using iSync, try Missing Sync by Mark Space www.markspace.com. It works like a charm.

Mark/Space Contacts will synchronize your entire contact database with the Address Book, subject to these caveats:

Mark/Space Events will synchronize your entire calendaring database with iCal, subject to these caveats:

To synchronize your task items with the Palm Desktop, use the standard Tasks Conduit from Palm. While the earlier ToDo Conduit can remain active and will not create a conflict, it's pointless given your handheld organizer's identity. Be sure that the Mark/Space Tasks conduit and the standard Palm contact and calendaring conduits are disabled in order to avoid conflicts with those.

Since you will be synchronizing task information with the Palm Desktop and contacts and calendars using the Missing Sync for Palm OS, you could choose to also synchronize memos with the Palm Desktop using the standard Memos Conduit or use the combination Mark/Space MemoPad conduit and matching OS X application. Again, there is no point in having the earlier Memo Conduit active with your handheld if you choose to synchronize memos with the Palm Desktop, and it cannot be active if you choose the Mark/Space pair instead.

You will continue to use iSync only with your Motorola RAZR mobile handset. Be sure that you have removed the Palm as a device from iSync, and check the Mark/Space User Guide for information about using iSync.

I am new to Imac and just want to get this strait:
- I have a Treo 650
- I have followed the Isync instructions
- I have gotten to the point where I 'Add Device' in isync

The problem is that though the Imac can see the palm and I get a 'connection in progress' on the Palm, Under Add Device I get the message:
'iSync can not connect to this device'
? Is there a solution or do I have to use Missing Sync ?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

No, you can use iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit, although the synchronization implementation in the Missing Sync for Palm OS is much better than that of iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit.

The problem here is that you are attempting to add your Palm device using the Add Device… option in iSync. That simply won't work, as explained in the iSync Help file. You must instead use the option at the bottom of the same menu: Enable Palm OS Syncing… to add any Palm device. That will install the built-in iSync Palm Conduit and move the standard Palm conduits out of your active Conduits folder, activate the iSync Palm Conduit and add your device, which will appear in the main window of iSync as a Tungsten icon appended with your HotSync name.

Thank you for the swift reply.

I had done that previously but don't seem to be getting anywhere. My device does not appear in the Palm window (I assume you mean the small rectangular silver window labelled 'iSync') despite the message that

'isync to Palm OS device is now enabled' appearing.

Below the above message, I am instructed to:

select the iSync HotSync Conduit in HotSync Manager

I had downloaded Hotsync from Palm and in the HotSync Setup I have 'Enabled' selected.

When I go to Connection settings, PalmConnect and USB are checked.
When bluetooth-pda and then click settings, I get a selection of a long list of Modems which is meaningless to me.

Am I supposed to select one of these modems?
Am I supposed to deselect PalmConnect and USB?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Initiate a synchronization first using USB. PalmConnect should not be checked.

If that effort is successful and you wish to synchronize instead using Bluetooth, you must then pair your device using Bluetooth—accessible either from the Bluetooth icon in your menu bar or the Bluetooth pane in the System Preferences application—prior to attempting to add it to iSync using the Enable Palm OS Syncing… option. If, at that point, you have already added using USB, you do not add it again, you simply change your HotSync option to USB.

This is all much easier to do, particularly if you intend to jump back and forth between USB and Bluetooth, if you are instead using the Missing Sync for Palm OS.

You must configure both 'ends' of the process is using Bluetooth: initiate the pairing from your Treo and confirm it from the Macintosh.

Missing sync has been a very unreliable experience for me. It has permitted the switch from palm desktop to ical & adressbook. On the other hand, syncing has been extremely unreliable mainly with adressbook. Let me explain:

The first signs of trouble appeared when a sync would not import new contacts from my treo 650 to my desktop (Imac G5). I Use the missing sync v. 5.1.2

Contacts with Markspace support have not helped: the first request was to reset the sync history in isync to force a "first-time " sync. Numerous tries at this game gave random results (sometimes contacts would pass through while other info would not). I still had differing contacts between my treo & the desktop.

Figuring I'd force an overwrite of my desktop adressbook, I backed up my desktop adressbook, erased all the contacts on it, reset sync history, forced a first time sync (although disabling the "desktop overwrites handheld" box). The result: no merge but a full erase of my palm adressbook!

I figured "well too bad, it was only a couple of minor contacts lost, let's restore the palm database by forcing a desktop overwrites handheld!": Nothing!!! I have been in contact with Markspace who have sent me a script to force sync services to reset but to no avail.

Funny thing is: ical gets synced perfectly so I'm figuring it has to do with the the contacts conduit! The forums at Markspace have several posts of people having desperate trouble with their adressbook syncing.

Any insight would be very helpfull! I have been without my adressbook for the last 4 days & feel quite handicapped professionally by this situation.

So my feedback on missing sync so far is not very positive...

First off, before using MissingSync, back up your stuff and sync your devices the way you have been to make sure all your info is current. See here:

http://www.markspace.com/support/kb.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=2674

I remember having to be sure to turn off Palm's HotSync and Mac's iSync in MissingSync's conduits window since they caused conflict with MissingSync's conduits. There's a lot of info about conduits here:

http://www.markspace.com/support/kb.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=114

that may help if you are having trouble getting up and running.

Also during the intial process USE THE MANUAL/HELP INFO that came with MissingSync! I know this goes against the grain for many men, and I'm sorry to be so hard on your sex, but the initial getting started process is clearly laid out and they explain the pop-messages that ask about how you want your data handled with the first sync.

I missed this the first time, so I uninstalled MissingSync and reinstalled, so I'd get the messages and interpret them correctly (they only appear with the inital sync). The little check boxes are important and I didn't check them the first time and all my data was insanely duplicated!

Take a little time and familiarize yourself with the manual first. It will save you loads of time in the long run!

Just a tip from your Aunt Deb!
