Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter won't work on thunderbolt port

Hello

I bought 2 new Macbook Pro 13' , 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7, with 8 Go 1600Mhz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2617).

I have connected a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter in order to show presentations on different LCD projectors but no image appear.

The external monitor is detected but no image is shown. I have tried to change the frequencies: parts of the screen appears but no a correct image. I have the same symptoms with the 2 Macbook Pro. Using old Macbook Pro with the same Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, the slides are showns normally.

I make a test with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and everythings works correctly with both adapters.

Does anybody has a solution?

Thank in advance for your help

Philippe

By any chance were you using a VGA->DVI adapter when trying to use the Mini-DisplayPort->VGA adapter? As in Mini-DisplayPort->VGA->DVI?

I had trouble with this. I found going straight to Mini-DisplayPort->VGA or Mini-DisplayPort->DVI worked perfectly but once I added a VGA->DVI or DVI->VGA adapter to the chain the screen would be detected by OS X but the monitor itself would give the "No signal detected" message. I tried all these combinations on the same monitor.

Not sure if it helps your situation but I have noticed some similar issues.

EDIT: Oh, and I have the new MacBook Pro 15inch with Retina all fully updated. I noticed that with my late-2009 White Macbook didn't have this issue with the cables and adapters.

Called Apple Support and they solved my issue.

1) Restart the computer in Safe Mode with display attached (shut down and restart while holding down shift key).

The display showed up without distortion.

2) Change the display to my desired preferences (dimensions and refresh rate).

3) Restart computer. ...and it works like a charm.

Vioala!

I can confirm that this solution indeed solves the problem - on my mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 running Lion 10.7.4.

So far, following steps above - after a week of use my MBP is connecting properly to 4 projectors.

New MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.5 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 [13-inch, Mid-2012]

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB

I am attempting to play a TV episode in iTunes - that is downloaded to the MacBook Pro - not in the cloud - within iTunes.

When I connect the MacBook, via Mini Display Port (Apple) to VGA adaptor which goes to an LCD projector, I get sound, but no video.

Thank you for any help.

I'm using MBP :

  • 13", Mid 2012
  • 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
  • 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024MB
  • OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)

and still trying to plug thunderbolt-to-VGA Display adapter to secondary display (Projector/Monitor) but failed with condition on secondary display appear to be out of signal (black screen), just like when You not plug them at all. Everytime I plug that adapter to thunderbolt port my screen on MBP blinking but nothing happen to my secondary monitor.

I did safeboot (by holding shift when restarting) with the display attached on MBP of course but still... 😢nothing happen to my secondary display, and then I Go to Displays preferences, while pushing option button I've clicked Detect Display, the display on my MBP just blinking but nothing change to my secondary display. Still holding option and clicked the scale and trying every option there but still...nothing.

I just need my MBP to run my presentation over VGA projector just because the Keynote is very awesome!!!

I would like to know if same spec. of MBP experiencing same problem, then wishing any solution to it.🙂

I am also having this problem. Attempting to connect my MacPro 13- Inch, Mid 2012 to my TV with an MDP to VGA adapter. I have tried restarting in safe mode, calling Mac Support, and updating my

Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver. All options have not worked. The funny thing is when I'm at my login screen the display is showing up on my TV and Mac. But, the minute I log in, the display on the TV goes blank.

I would greatly appreciate some help.

I had a similar problem with an adapter (not made by Apple) and I found the following solution:

1) Go to preferences

2) Select Monitor

3) Press the Option key (the one with "alt" written on it)

Then some magic happens: It suddenly appears an (otherwise) hidden button: "Identify Monitor"

3) Click on "Identify Monitor"

4) Connect the monitor through the VGA adapter

That's all!

(By the way, a question to Apple staff: why is that button hidden?)

Information on my system: OSX 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro.

I am having the same problem. This solution worked for me exactly one time. Now when I plug my VGA adapter into my TV (Sharp Aquos) the computer will not display even if I restart the computer in safe mode. I can see the display in system preferences but it will not work no matter what I try.

Does anyone else have a fix for this issue?

Thanks,

I'm having the same problem: no video to a Samsung 710V VGA monitor from a new MiniMac (MGEM2LL/A) ...

  • First call to support line: the tech indicated this is a chronic issue, and suggested I install support.apple.com/kb/DL799 (Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware Update v1.0). I did that using the HDMI output to my TV (pretty fuzzy). The tech also indicated I need not connect my Samsung monitor, only the mini displayport-to-vga adapter (I'll call it "the adapter"). However, DL799 contradicted that, so I went by the instructions in DL799 instead.
  • Second call to support line: the mac wouldn't open MiniDPVGAFirmwareUpdate.pkg because it was "from an unknown developer". The tech led me through how to change the security settings to download any app. Apple, please sign your firmware releases!
  • Third call to support line (after reboot) when the problem persisted. In addition to some other suggestions, the tech asked me to reverse the connection for the VGA cable, saying VGA cables are unidirectional (as well as HDMI cables and DVI cables), and that the correct end must be hooked up to the computer. I had never known that! I was unable to find any "computer" or "monitor" indication on VGA cable, so I just swapped the ends. The problem persisted, and I ran out of time and had to end the session.
  • First visit to apple store: lugged in the monitor, the VGA cable, the mini-mac, power cords, the adapter, documentation, etc. The tech there swapped out the third-part adapter, and swapped in an adapter he found in the store. It worked, and I said "Wow, that was easy". (Some divinity hear me say that, and I am now cursed). He sold me a new model MB572Z/B, which I took home.
  • At home, I installed the adapter. The nuts in the Apple adapter that engage the bolts on the VGA plug are set too deep, so I was able to engage only one side of the plug, and ended up taping the other side together. Booted up and ... no VGA. I tried the safe-mode boot (holding down the shift key), but no luck.
  • I've made a reservation for another visit to the apple store. Hope that it's just an issue with a new/defective Apple adapter (in addition to a new/defective third-party adapter).
