Horrible colors on external monitor using macbook air(2012) with mini dp to hdmi

I have one of the new macbook airs (2012) hooked up to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a mini display port to hdmi adapter.

The dsiplay shows up fine on the external monitor, except for the colors and contrast being terrible. Any color grey on a white background doesnt even seem to render. However if I look at that same image on the airs screen, I can see all of the grey colors perfectly. I have tested the hdmi cable and monitor on different computers and they work perfectly. I have tried three different adapters all with the same problems, leaving me to believe that there is something wrong with the macbook air itself and its ability to output a mini display port signal.

Does anyone know why I would be having a problem like this?

I have exactly the same problem:

Laptop: MacBook Pro 13", Mid 2012

External Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster SA550 (HDMI input)

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter: Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support (H1824ZM in the Apple Store)

Colors are generally washed out, very low contrast, very high brightness, some fonts are distorted.

I submitted a bug report about three weeks ago, and within a week Apple followed up with me. They sent me an application that captures all display parameters into a report. I ran the application and sent them the report. No word yet, but someone DID follow up with me, and the issue is still marked as open. This seems a much more reasonable route than the court system. In the meantime, I'm getting by with a DVI adapter.

The 2.0 update didn't work for me, either, but I'm still hopeful that they'll get this fixed if we can get the information to the engineers.

There's now a new Update for MBA and MBP that fixed it for me. Or at least I think it has. Colors and text is now pretty acceptable and the rest is probaply from my lack of calibration skill. I had to play a little bit with the monitor calibration until it looked a lot better.

My advice to you: Use the expert mode of the calibration - it works better than the n00b version^^

Several weeks ago, I took this problem to my local 'Apple Authorized Campus Store' since I live in a college town and there is no 'real' Apple store nearby.

The technicians took some capture data & sent it to Apple to create something they called an "accelerated report". One of the technicians is experiencing the same problem with his personal mid 2012 MBA.

I am being stubborn and refusing to spend more money for the mini DP to DVI --> DVI to HDMI workaround... but I might break down and get it.

Hello everyone,

as the Apple engineers are not reading these forums usually/regulary, the most effective way to change this issue is to call their support hotline: Call them and talk with them until you get someone who is able to send a report to the engineers (http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). The more users are doing this the faster something will be changed. 🙂
