I don't think anyone can determine that since the first Airs were only released 4.5 years ago.

Apple's never published a statement like that but with the way technology advances, a six year old system isn't worth a whole lot.

Since the oldest MBA is not yet six years old, I guess the answer has to be "nobody knows." Maybe Apple has secretly implanted a time bomb in each one. We'll find out in 2014.

It is possible that the person who espoused this opinion looked at Apple's past history of supporting hardware and came to the conclusion that Apple will continue to support the MBA for 6 years and that the OP concluded that meant it would last 6 years.

Here's another tidbit ... note the original MacBook Airs which are now 4.5 years old will not be capable of running Mountain Lion when it comes out later this month. This is a typical behavior from Apple - note they're doing the same with the original iPad and iOS6.

This behavior is, of course, quite different from the machine simply no longer working after 6 years. But it's not expected that folks keep them that long.

The bottom of that page confirms only the iPad 2 and iPad 3 can run it.
