My MacBook Pro Retina keeps crashing

The crash is almost always the same and seems related to graphics...any suggestions / fixes?

Hi everyone,

I'm having the same problem with random restarts on MBP with Retina. It's not a consistent problem but it does happen on and off and I am seriously concerned. I've copied the report below and as I am beyond clueless as to what it means, I was hoping someone here might be able to help me. This is an early 2013 and it's still running as fast and as well as the day I got it with no issues apart from this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This may be a coincidence, but I have had six kernel panic crashes in four days in Mavericks 10.9.3, and haven't had kernel panic crashes for years in Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks up to this point. The one common file for me is also com.wdc.driver.USB_64HP. I have a WD USB 3.0 external HD, and I assume that is a driver for the HD--I don't know. These kernel panics have usually occurred while the MBPro Retina was in Sleep mode, but I think Time Machine keeps working during sleep.

In any case, how do I remove that driver file? Where is it? Under system/extensions, I have WDUSB_64HPDriver.kext and three other WDxxxx.kext files. Can or should I remove any of these? Should I reinstall OSX and re-update to 10.9.3?

I'll list the non-apple files that show up in the KP report below.

Thanks.

I tracked down updated software that came out in Sep 2013 here that includes v1.0.1 of that driver.

My next question would be why would you need a special driver when Apple supposedly supplies compatible drivers for all USB 3.0 drives.

Thanks to Grant Bennet=Alder and MadMacs0 for replying, and to answer (partially) Chinthana's question.

I, too, don't know why special drivers for WD drives are needed for a 3.0 drive.

So I removed all the WDxxx Kext files and all other references I could find in the main Library and System directories to WD. I emptied the Trash (if you don't do that, the WD kext files keep reappearing in System/Library/Extensions, or at least they did for me). Anyway, they are all gone at this point, and my WD 3.0 USB drive is working fine. I think all these get installed when you get a new WD drive and let their software do its thing. Best thing to do, I suspect, is to use the Mac Disk Utility and just format the WD drive without ever using any of the WD drivers.

Now, the question is, did this resolve my kernel panics, which are occurring mainly when the Mac is asleep. I suspect it won't, because these just started after I got an Apple Airport Extreme last week, and although everything is working fine with that, the console log always shows th computer trying to access Airport just before the kernel panic occurs. I may call Apple support on that one.

As for "removing a kernel," I don't know what you mean, exactly. You can remove kext files manually, put them in Trash, the you must empty the Trash before you reboot, it seems.

Thank you so much KenV54. I really appreciate your answer as well as all the input from Grant Bennet and MadMacs0.

When I asked how you remove the kernel, I think what I meant was removing the kext files. Could you tell me where these files would be located? I'm terribly sorry to be an inconvenience but I have never really ventured so deep in to the inner workings of my mac.

Thank you all again. I'm truly grateful for your help 🙂

Chinthana,

You can find the kext extensions in /system/library/extensions. Be careful about removing kext files, and I think you should only remove non-Apple kext files. Also, they will reappear if the trash isn't emptied and if the original non-Apple program isn't completely removed, which can be difficult to do if it is hidden somewhere. Do a Google search for removing third party apps--sometimes there are files for a particular app that aren't intuitive in terms of the names of the files you want to remove, and sometimes there are uninstall programs for them.

The whole problem of kernel panics is very frustrating. You may have to reinstall OSX and the updates, repair permissions, etc.
