Imac G3 trayloading Grape Cd won't recognize disks.

Hi,

When i got my imac it was fine and everthing but then i donwnloaded a software for cd drive and then i deleted it. After then it wont read cd's and the AppleCD Audio player wont work.. i get an error message saying: The Apple CD/DVD driver was not loaded at startup. Please be sure that at least one Apple CD-rom, DVD-rom drive is connected and turned on, and that the file "Apple CD/DVD Driver" is in the System folder. Then restart your Macintosh. Do i need a cd driver?

Yes. If you had an earlier release of Mac OS X than Lion, I think you could have done it with Disk Utility (in Mac OS X). But I checked on my Mac, and the Disk Utility for Lion no longer has the option to install the Mac OS 9 Disk Driver. So, the iMac running Mac OS 9 would not have been able to access that drive.

If you can reformat ("Initialize") it using Drive Setup in Mac OS 9, Mac OS 9 would obviously have access to it, and Mac OS X would have access to it.

Ok..ill try that and see if it fixes the problem. thanks for all your help, i really apriciate it.. I was almost going to give up on that iMac. 🙂

Um ok let me explain the cd driver, When i put in the iMac it shows as a pc file right.. But on my Macbook Pro it shows like just a file ( blank paper ) is that bad???

I don't think it's critical, if you are not running Mac OS X (or using "NetBoot client environments"), but it won't hurt to install it. Just be sure to follow the instructions precisely.

I want to upgrade to panther or jaguar. so i was told i need that upgrade and i got it but then is said: that my computer had a more modern update for some reason.

Then, it was probably sold with that firmware (or maybe even a newer version) already installed, or someone else installed it already.

If the firmware updater says you have a newer version already, I think you are good. There may be a way to check (the current "Boot ROM" version) by booting into open firmware, but I don't remember the details. This is info about Open Firmware

That seems kinda difficult... Hehe.. the promblem is having to find the discs :\ for upgrade ..
