New Motion 5 user - Cannot save project templates

I just purchased Motion 5 from the app store last week. Everything works fine and it seems to be stable but I cannot save project templates. It will not allow me to create a new category. This seems to be the issue. If I could create a new category I would probably be able to save the project. No matter what I try it fails.

Sorry you are having these problems. If you start with a motion project from the project browser then you should be able to proceed as I outlined above ie use the Publish Template from the File menu. If you start from a Motion Template ie Title, Transition, Effect or Generator then use the save item from the File menu. In all cases the dialog box which appears allows to create a new category. If these options are grayed out you have a problem with your installation. I would first trash the Motion preferences "com.apple.motionapp.plist and

com.apple.motionapp.LSSharedFileList.plist". You will find these in User/Library/Preferences. Then relaunch Motion and it will rebuild these files. If that doesn't solve the issue I would reinstall Motion. Good luck! Some folks in FCPX forum have had trouble with MacKeeper causing grayed out menus. Do you have that software installed?

I'm having the same problem. I created small animations to be imported into Final Cut Pro X, which seems like an obvious thing to be able to do since the programs pretty much go together.

When I try to do what you've listed above, "publish" is grayed out. I won't let me save or publish anything. It also won't let me create an new category. Those check boxes are there, but when Publish as Final Cut Generator is selected, the publish button is grayed out.

My boyfriend happened on the solution - when you go into the Publish Template screen, the "Category" is required - you can't let it default. You have to set up a new category and use it. I don't see why Apple wouldn't communicate that simple bit of information - maybe by giving an error message? It doesn't make sense that would be secret information.

Thanks Jim for the good advice. This is the answer for not being able to create a category when trying to save project templates using publish template from the file menu. Delete the files that Jim mentions here and Motion will save properly.

FYI - This may have happened for me because I have both Motion 4 and 5 installed on my machine. Now everything works properly.

Motion templates when you publish them are saved in your movies folder as a composition or generator (if you select the generator check box). They are organized under compositions or generators by category so a category is required by the file structure. The popup menu shows you the existing categories for compositions or generators ( if generator check box is selected) or you create a new category. In either case you must specify a category so motion knows wher to save it so FCPX can find it.
