Can't move ringtones to "Tones" folder in itunes

I have followed instructions on how to create a ringtone from my own music.

I have created the m4r version and saved it to the desk top.

I have deleted the original track.

I have dragged the icon from the desk top to my music folder in itunes.

But it will not go into "Tones". It stays in "Music".

Please can anyone tell me how to get it into "Tones" so I can sync it to my iphone 4s and use it as a ringtone?

Many thanks.

Hi,

I haven't solved this problem yet, but I will.

I wanted to add a comment to everyone who is as mad as I am. My ringtone is a clip from "Time(Clock of my heart)" by Boy George. In real life I owe Boy George a royalty each time I receive a call. ...If I ever get the thing to work.

In this day and age it would be possable for Boy George's agent to bill me. So you guys too might face future charges if your ringtone could be caught. In this day and age its possiable.

Just saying.

Thanks,

Austin

Hi, I had the same problems and I finally got it.

Okay, so I also took the same steps as you did and I wasn't successful either. Intest of keeping it in Finder, drag the file to your desktop. After that go to you iTunes and go to the library, not the playlists or anything, IN THE LIBRARY. Then, you need to delete the original and AAC file that is in your library. After that, I assure you it will work. Go to tones and drag from your desktop to there.

100% trustworthy, just did it in my mac 🙂

I'm rubbish at IT so here's my version which worked after taking bits from other versions using windows 7:

1. Select track in iTunes library

2. Right click and select get info

3. Select options tab

4. Change stop time to 30 seconds

5. Ok

6. Right click song again and select 'Create AAC Version'. You will hear the iTunes tone.

7. Right click AAC Version (directly below original track)

8. Select summary to see where new format is saved (under the heading WHERE:- shows as m4a format

9. Find location as shown in summary (usually C:\Documents and settings\User\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes media\Music\name of song etc.

10. There should be 2 versions of the song in different formats. Change the m4a version to m4r by renaming it.

11. Copy the m4r version to the 'Tones' folder of iTunes Media (still in the c drive)

12. Go back to iTunes (may need to close and reopen it) and connect phone.

13. Go to Tones and sync track with phone

14. Check settings/sounds on phone and new ringtone will be there ( I didn't have to delete the original mp3 and its still there in my library). The ringtone works great.
