Can't move ringtones to "Tones" folder in itunes

I have followed instructions on how to create a ringtone from my own music.

I have created the m4r version and saved it to the desk top.

I have deleted the original track.

I have dragged the icon from the desk top to my music folder in itunes.

But it will not go into "Tones". It stays in "Music".

Please can anyone tell me how to get it into "Tones" so I can sync it to my iphone 4s and use it as a ringtone?

Many thanks.

I'm rubbish at IT so here's my version which worked after taking bits from other versions using windows 7:

1. Select track in iTunes library

2. Right click and select get info

3. Select options tab

4. Change stop time to 30 seconds

5. Ok

6. Right click song again and select 'Create AAC Version'. You will hear the iTunes tone.

7. Right click AAC Version (directly below original track)

8. Select summary to see where new format is saved (under the heading WHERE:- shows as m4a format

9. Find location as shown in summary (usually C:\Documents and settings\User\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes media\Music\name of song etc.

10. There should be 2 versions of the song in different formats. Change the m4a version to m4r by renaming it.

11. Copy the m4r version to the 'Tones' folder of iTunes Media (still in the c drive)

12. Go back to iTunes (may need to close and reopen it) and connect phone.

13. Go to Tones and sync track with phone

14. Check settings/sounds on phone and new ringtone will be there ( I didn't have to delete the original mp3 and its still there in my library). The ringtone works great.

I have the same problem but my ringtone was purchased on iTunes. I did not create it. I have been successful at this before but this new one simply won't go. I have checked all the right boxes, exited and re-entered iTunes, everything. I am NOT a techie so I dont' understand the AAC file stuff and I don't think I should have to change ANYTHING in order to sync a simple ringtone into my iPhone. The "Tones" folder is there as are my previous ringtones. But the new one will NOT sync over. I've tried dragging every way I can. can ANYONE help. I mean I spend a whopping $0.99 and I want my ringtone. Thanks

Solution... For mac users this worked for me...

1) Drag your track into iTunes if it isn't already in there.

2) Right click it and press "create AAC version"

3) There'll now be a copy of that song in iTunes, you may have to search for it. Now right click it, and "show in finder.

4) More than likely, this revealed file is in an iTunes media folder, if so, drag it to your desktop and delete it from iTunes. It will as wether to delete file from media folder, choose yes.

5) Select the song on your desktop, hit enter and change m4a to m4r.

6) Drag the song into your tones folder in iTunes.

Hopefuly that's it 🙂

I was having that problem, too. No matter what I did, I wasn't able to drag the new ringtone from "Tones" in my library to "Tones" on my iPhone. I thought maybe it was because I have Windows 8.1 pop-ups I was supposed to be finding in Windows weren't there.

Eventually, this is what I did and it worked:

I had my iphone plugged into the computer so it showed up in iTunes.

Next, I clicked on my iPhone under "Devices" at the left side of iTunes, and instead of "Summary," I clicked on "Tones."

I clicked on "Sync Tones" then All tones. (I had only one tone at this point)

Then I clicked "Apply" at the bottom of the window. It appeared to be syncing...when I went to "Sounds" on my actual phone, it was there under Ringtones.

P.S. Despite what some others have said, the only thing I did to change the file name was to click on the m4a extension, and change the a to an r. It appears to have worked.

Hello everyone I am happy to say I have solved all of your problems! 🙂 Simply go to this Link and select your file and they will change the file to whatever you want! When you change the title of it from mp3 to m4r it is not being changed. Only the title so it will not work that way. With Zamzar they will change it completely! I have been struggling with this for a while as well as you have been struggling but I hope this helps. I will have you know that I am on an old crappy mac so if it works for me it will work for you. I even bet this will work for windows users! Here is the Link http://www.zamzar.com/convert/m4r-to-mp3/
