Server continually rejecting password for Mail

Hi,

I have spent an hour on the phone to Telstra (my ISP) and they are saying this is a Mac problem. When my Mail tried to connect with the server I get this pop up box :"The Big Pond POP server “mail.bigpond.com” rejected the password for user ***", I then have to reenter my password and after two or three times it seems to fix the problem and retrieve the mail. It is driving me crazy!!! Does anyone have a suggestion of how to fix this? I've checked my password (correct), Telstra checked my e-mail settings (all ok), my keychain password is correct... not sure what else to try.

Thank you

I recently have experienced this problem too as I am also with Bigpond. Noticed it only within the last few weeks or so. Have you tried deleting your keychain passwords? If you open keychain access and search for your bigpond passwords, delete then relaunch mail and enter your password and it may help. Seems to have worked for me (so far). I followed these instructions I found..

**Mail stores its passwords in the user's keychain, and if for some reason the keychain entry is not working properly then Mail may be sending an improper password to the server. Therefore, one approach you can take (especially if the problem happens very frequently) is to remove and reset the Mail entries. Open the Keychain Access application in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and then search for password entries for your e-mail account. It may be easier to isolate the password by searching for your account provider's name (such as "Gmail" or "Yahoo") and then removing the revealed password entries. Do not worry about removing the wrong ones, as your system will just replace them when you access the respective services.

After you have removed the passwords, relaunch Mail and enter your password again when prompted, making sure to click the option to save the password in your keychain.**

Hope this helps!

All I can say is the first knee-jerk reaction from many tech support people is "it's a Mac problem." I'm an AT&T DSL subscriber and have experienced the same issue from time to time. It has always turned out to be an AT&T problem in the end. Sometimes it takes weeks for the truth to come out. If Telstra has a users forum try checking there to see if others are having the same problem and what operating system they are using.

It's pretty simple. Your e-mail program submits your user ID and password to the server. If your credentials are correct it should respond. If it doesn't it's almost always a problem with the server(s), either overloaded and timing out or misconfigured . The fact that your password is eventually accepted after several tries definitely points to Telstra's end.
