Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I can't boot from any external drive using my new MacBook Pro Retina, even a drive with OS created by the Recovery HD of the Retina. Anyone have a solution?

I have a variety of external drives with universal Lion systems on them, and none of them connected via USB boots my MacBook Pro Retina. I don't have ability yet to connect by thunderbolt. Does anyone else have this problem, or knows of support. Applecare has yet to figure it out.

Thanks Clinton,

I could still make Time Machine back-ups by booting up from old HD on old borrowed 2011 Mac and running Time Machine.

Does that mean I can use Time Machine to restore everything except the old system and still keep the new system on my new Mac, but retore apps, fonts, codecs, preferences, etc?

PS: I'm not familiar with this forum, but I notice I can award points to people who help, how do I send you 5 points for helping me?

x Craig

I have a few Macs and am doing some isolation testing.

From iMac 20" intel unit, I can't boot to a USB2 external cloned image, but I can boot to an external if it's connected to the Firewire 400 connection.

From MBP RD 15" I do not have a Firewire port to test, but same issue with USB2 or 3 external drives.

Will look to purchase a Thunderbolt external drive encloser so I can install the cloned 3.5" External SATA drive I created the clone image with.

I don't think we have the ability to boot to an external USB on OSX 10.8.

Thanks,

Joseph

Hi, geomoe, everyone.

I'm having a similar problem with the new MacBook Pro Retina 15" late 2013. You can find the explicit problem here:

How to create bootable external...: Apple Support Communities

I'll try to follow your lead by cloning my new MBP running Mavericks 10.9.1 How did you get the system that was running on the source MBP to CCC clone itself (while running) in bootable form onto the USB Flash Drive?
