Speedstep and Turboboost not working on my MacbookPro mid 2012

Hi there,

I have a 13@ macbook pro mid-2012, and have noticed that speedstep and turboboost do not work in OS X Lion. I'm stuck at 2.9GHz.

If I boot in bootcamp, speedstep and Turboboost work fine (CPU speed varies under load from 1GHz to 3.6GHz).

Any idea why? I thought speedstep and Turboboost were supported in OS X since 10.4...

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 13 inch 2.9 GHz, 16 GB, 2x750GB

Not sure why Apple doesn't allow to access actual speed, but as long as it's working, I'm letting this go.

CPU-Z only shows an approximation of the CPU speed based on what the guest OS reports, it does the same in parallels.

I don't know why Coolbook doesn't work anymore, it might be because it's not a 64bits app.

Terminal asks the kernel, and the kernel reports the "locked" values, not the real ones, so no terminal can't help either.

As far as I'm concerned, the case is closed. If there are some battery life issues, this (CPU speed not moving when using utilities/terminal to display it) is not the reason.

As you have an older MBP, you could try installing Hardware Monitor, it might handle the real speed.

Otherwise my advice is to revert to Snow Leopard. I had the same issue (with battery life) on my MBP 2011 which came with Lion, and reverting to Snow Leopard solved it.

Good luck!

Totally agree, but it's better to know it's working but can't display rather than to find out it can display but is not working 🙂

Re Hardware Monitor, all the features are available in the demo. Just select System Info in the Window menu (on the top of the screen when HM is running. It will display your CPU info.

If you click More info next to the nr of processors it will display your Turboboost info.

If you click Management Info next to the system bus frequency you get more info if you select the processor tab in the next screen.

Good luck!

This (the internet) is a free country, so I understand, but as far as I'm concerned, given the way Hardware Monitor is developped and how it handles every single option for all the Macs built since 2002, I take the developper's word on the issue. Have a look at the demo, at the website and at the frequently asked questions (there is one about Turboboost by the way although it's related to temps rather than CPU speed), this is someone who knows what he is talking about.

Apple has just released an update to solve some battery life issues in the new Macbooks.

This is what triggered my investigation into Speedstep, as I was getting low battery life and therefore suspected Speedstep not to be enabled. So this update seems to be solving that.

If you have battery life issues with the new macbooks (June 2012), make sure you download this update (available in Software update).

And no, the real CPU speed is still not displayed after the update:).

Now if they could release an update for the HD4000 driver which causes kernel panic crashes, I would be able to use my new Mac as it should be.
