More 9.2.2 Net Connect Issues

I have a 4 Macs all connecting fantastically to each other over a Gigabit connection using D-Link Switches and connecting to the Internet via a D-Link Gaming Router. 3 of the machines are running OS X 10.4.5 (Clients and Servers), and one is located in the studio - usually running OS 9.2.2 and Pro Tools MIX.

The network issues revolve around this OS 9.2.2 installation. The machine is a 733 G4 (Digital Audio) which occasionally runs 10.4.5 client.

** IN OS X this machine connects to the network - INTERNET and INTRANET**
** IN OS 9 this machine cannot connect to the INTERNET, but can connect to the INTRANET **

I also booted into OS X, ran CLASSIC mode (same system as OS 9) and was not able to connect to the INTERNET.

It appears as if the OS 9 System cannot resolve DNS names ...

Internet Explorer attempts to connect, but after about 2 minutes gives up reporting a CONNECTION FAILURE ...

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanx - and sorry about the capitals 🙂

Ok, When I plug in the iMac, the router light doesn't go on, so I swapped them around on the router... still nothing. I swithched the same cable back to the Dell and did the same tests and everything works. I will get a new cable and try the same test as well a little later. I restarted the iMac... and no change and no light on router. I then went into the iMac extensions folder and under the 'system folder' there is no mention of 'Duplexer extension', only Mac TCP DNR, Classic Support UI, ProxyApp, and Print File.

ps I checked the Ethernet 'active only when needed' and it was off and everything else was the way you said it needs to be.

Did I mention, Thanks for all your time and help? Well... Thank you.

Nordic,

Not lookng good for the Ethernet card in the iMac.

But just two more things. I would have expected 100-200 Extensions in the Extensions folder in the System Folder on the iMac. Can you confirm this ? The list of "extensions" you give all reside in the System Folder rather than the Extensions folder.

There may be an Ethernet update for iMac - there was for my earlier Bondi Blue iMac. Check this one:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86047

Although it appears only to help with AppleShare volumes rather than Internet.

Have you reinstalled the OS since you got this iMac ? Or is it like it was when you got it second user ? Now beginnng to wonder if you have a full set of required Ethernet extensions - there are loads.

It sounds like Nordic was looking in Extensions Manager, rather than in the Extensions folder itself. Extensions Manager does have a group labelled "System Folder", which are the loose items.

Wah !!

Maybe if you threaten the Mac with a hammer or AOL !!!

Just out of interest, is/are the DNS server IP addresses in the router configuration the same as those in your OS9 TCP/IP control panel.

If they're not, write down the one in the control panel and blank it out. And try again.

Or do you have some whizzy router that manages to stop specified computers accessing the internet (in OS9 only of course, cos I remember you telling me it works in OSX, with the same IP address) ?????

I had thought it was something in OS9, as OSX is OK, but as you can speak to the router with IE, I'm beginning to think it's a difference in what OS9 and OSX supports. When in OSX, is there only one network connection active in the Network Status choice of the Network system preferemce.
