How much space does OSX tiger take?

I am puzzled because i thought I had deleted evrything bar the OS and yet 47GB is still being used up so i am wondering if there are some hidden files which I can access. This is in regard to my old computer which i wish to give to someone clean bar applications.I did a volume erase vis disc utility but that didnt make much difference.I used Onyx to perforrm a clean up as well but feel sure there is more i can do.Any ideas?

By ID I assume you refer to your online user name.

Online user names are not tied to particular computers.

Depending upon settings the computer remembers some details but these are almost always in preference files within the Library within that user's Home folder. Usually removing the account and hence Home folder will remove all trace of that user's passwords etc.

An exception is the computer name - if it is called eg Nevilles Mac I may choose to change it.

When you have done everything else don't forget to do your final security cleaning of free space with Disk Utility as before - it may take hours - perhaps let it run overnight.

Erase free space is not erasing a volume this is a security clean of free space for the paranoid. It will not remove anything further.

I think the best thing to work towards is a means of booting from another device and then erasing the whole drive.

Did you want to sell it with a bootable OS?

Since you do not have install CDs or DVDs your options are:

  1. A bootable external hard disk - the easiest
  2. Target Disk Mode from another Mac - easy but both Macs need FireWire
  3. A bootable USB memory stick - should work with either OS 9 or OS X (needs OS X 10.4.6 or above) - can be tedious to get it to work

Do you have an OS 9 install CD? If not do you have a bootable OS 9 on one of your disks? Classic alone will not do, it needs to be an OS 9 you can boot into.

Do you have any empty USB memory sticks? If so what size?

Do you have an external hard disk and does it have a bootable OS on it? How much free space does it have?

Are you sure it is a Tiger OS install disk?

My Tiger CD 1 follows this sequence:

  1. An OS install icon - which I click
  2. A language selection page
  3. A request to accept Apple's conditions
  4. At some point a menu bar appears - for Disk Utility etc
  5. I ignore this and keep hitting continue until I am asked which disk I wish to install on

What message do you get. I need the precise words.

Hi BDAqua, mi

I used that piece of software and it recovedred a few more GB but am still left with 40 missing. What it did show me thoughis a list of of whats using that space up and the first thing I noticed was that Muisc took up 23.4 Gb with 21.3 of that being iTunes. Also 1.7 GB library, 1 Gb Pictures and a succession of minor ones which total 26 gb for Users. After that Appl uses up 5.2 GB ,Library , again,4.9 GB and System 1.2GB.

Seems to me they are all hidden somewhere.Itunes puzzles because of the sheer size of it and yet i deleted all the content. I do remember once losing the conent because i erased volume by ,mistake and had to re rip all my CDs but i cant see that would have done it

I cut and paste the contents of console for you to see because it doesnt mean much to me

Edit- I just found the toolbar uninstall app, double clicked it and nothing much happened.there were 3 options- SearchElf. Translator and WiseConvert

I assume you mean log files in library? i'll trash the lot .All gone bar DS store which I cant trash. Now i'll trash the stuff Omnisweep reveals and see what happens. It kind of worries me because i dont really know what i am doing,

That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!

If you are running Tiger or Leopard:

Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:

/Library/Application Support/Conduit

/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader

/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg

/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg

/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle

/Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit

where / is the root library on your Hard Disk.

If you are running Snow Leopard you should also look here:

Library/launchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist

Library/Application support/conduit plugins

Also, as mentioned by Gilli2000:

Library/Receipts - If you read it, it has information in it at the bottom referring extensively to "CT" and "community toolbar".

Maybe it is harmless, but trash those items anyway!

If you are running Lion:

From the Finder Menu bar, select Go â–¹ Go to Folder, and in the box that opens write:

~/Library/Application Support/Conduit

Delete the second item if it is there.

Now select Go to Folder again and enter /Library

From the folder that opens, delete the following items if they are there (you may need your login password):

Application Support/Conduit

InputManagers/CTLoader

LaunchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist

ScriptingAdditions/ct_scripting.osax

then close the folder. Now select Go to Folder again and write: /Applications/Toolbars

Delete that item and close the Finder windows you opened. Log out then log back in, and you should be rid of it.

Note: Safari does not support any third-party toolbars except those supplied as an extension to Safari via the Extension Gallery.

Clicked on my Macintosh HD in Disk Utility , then erase , then erase free space. There were three options .At first I took the middle one which said would take 3 hours to complete the task, but 8 hours later it was still erasing so I stopped it and went for option1 which took an hour.I dont think the disk is split in two .All I have in the left hand box are 149.1 GB WDC WD 1600J and below it Macintosh HD

Basically I am hoping to clear my account completely, including all associated files and fiolders ,so i can hand it to someone else as a "clean" computer.I have opened an account for that person but before i delete my own account i want to make sure nothing remains other than the applications i downloaded which will be replicated in the new account
