iphone partially backsup to itunes, however itunes continuously not responding when I check task manager, please help?

If iTunes keeps locking up when trying to do a backup, you probably need to reinstall iTunes. With the phone disconnected, follow the instructions in this support document to completely uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it. This is for Windows 7. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
I have already tried reinstalling itunes & was not successful. Error messages include: 'itunes could not connect to this iphone', 'iphone unknown error has occured', 'attached device not functioning', 'itunes not responding'??
The "iTunes could not connect to this phone" error is a driver error, and the driver is installed with iTunes. I know you said that you have tried reinstalling, however did you uninstall as described in the support document? You need to ensure you remove all reminents of Apple software prior to the reinstall. I have another document that talks about driver support, but it is on my work computer and I don't have it here. I will try and post that for you either later today or tomorow.
Try this other support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 and see if that helps. Expand all of the sections and you will see individual solutions for driver issues.
Apologies for delayed response. I uninstalled iTunes as described in the support document & there doesn't seem to be any driver issues. It almost completes step 5 out of 5 syncs but not quite. Current error message 'iPhone cannot be synched. An internal device error occurred'?
It actually ended up being a port issue, not an iTunes issue. A friend suggested I try connecting the iPhone via a rear port rather than one at the front & it finally synched. How strange yet simple.
