I'm trying to create a way for the reader to name one of the main characters and have that name automatically appear throughout the duration of the book? Is there a widget or a way to do this?

You can make a widget "flipbook" that will use a username throughout the pages.
Maybe so, but doing this would defeat the purpose because, as far as iBooks is concerned, there will now be a book with a single page that contains a widget. This means that you can no longer navigate the book, search it, add notes, use a table of contents, etc.
Moreover, Apple would most likely reject such a book, precisely because of these deficiencies.
Your suggestion is not practical, in my opinion.
