Itunes can't read the contents of my ipod!

I just plugged my ipod into my computer and itunes gave me a message saying " iTunes cannot read the contents of the ipod '_iPod'. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore the iPod to factory settings." Is there anything i can do to fix my ipod touch besides restoring it? My ipod is currently on ios 4.3.3. Please help me!

Resetting my ipod didn't work. If i restore my ipod, will i be able to update my ipod and restore from a former backup after it is restored.

yes can restore from backup after the restore that deletes everything. the ipod needs to be higher or equal (ios) to backup.

Just note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media lke apps and music. If those are not in the iTunes library when you do the restore from backup they will not be on the iPod after the restore.
