Ipod crashing and wont turn on(4th gen)

For awhile now my ipod has been randomly crashing,it would reboot itself and be on and working fine again in about 3 minutes,but this time it crashed,and stayed on the apple logo screen for about an hour. As soon as it turned on,I quickly tried to email myself some important pictures,but as soon as i hit send,it crashed again,and now it wont turn on at all?(no logo screen,nothing) its not dead,I tried plugging it in to my computer and after half an hour it came up and said it was in recovery mode.great,lost all my stuff.Is this a common problem? and will restoring it work?

Error 9

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

Alright Ill try that, but if it doesnt work go back to the hosts file thing? I made it to where thats supposed to be but i can only find a sample hosts file

Im using the same usb plug i use for charging,it works, but it keeps giving me the error.

Thats what I had tried,couldnt find a hosts file there so searched the drivers folder and it only came up with the sample

okay with the sample right click and open in notepad make sure you run as administrator when using note pad then enter in this 74.208.151.171 gs.apple.com. and save
