iPhoto 9.3.1 - Adjust Controls Messed Up

Has anyone tried editing (adjusting) their photos in iPhoto 9.3.1? I just tried it, and the sliders (e.g. white point, highlights, shadows) are giving really weird results. I'm starting to wonder if it's an incompatability between iPhoto 9.3.1 and the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB) in my iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010).

Here are two screenshot, showing what I see when I adjust the black and white point sliders. Look how unnatural the photo looks. This definitely wasn't the behaviour of these controls in iPhoto '09.

Thanks for providing those examples John, they're great.

I've basically stopped editing photos in iPhoto, since summer 2012, because of these NEGATIVE changes by Apple. While it IS possible to get attractive results, it's really hard. If I try to edit a photo in iPhoto now, I end up really flat, dull looking images with ugly posterization in the highlights.

I've found a real solution to this problem.

Simply click on the Enhance button first. You'll notice that the Adjust sliders have moved (as you work expect) but that they now behave differently, as in, they now do what they used to do. Clicking on the Enhance button gives the Adjust sliders back their old (pre Summer 2012) qualities.

Whenever I want to edit a photo now, in iPhoto 9.4.3 (which is the current version), I simply click on the Enhance button first, and then go abouts making my own manual adjustments using the Adjust sliders.

OK, I've taken some screenshots of iPhoto 9.4.3. Here is a really clear example. Here is some concrete proof.

In this first screenshot, I've gone into the Adjust tab, and moved the white Levels slider (from 100% down to 55%). Looks horrible and artificial, doesn't it.

In this second screenshot, I've done exactly the same thing. I've gone into the Adjust tab, and moved the white Levels slider (from 100% down to 55%). The only difference is, I clicked on the Enhance button first, and then put all the sliders back to their default positions. The result looks much better, doesn't it. This is what iPhoto used to do, when you moved the white Levels slider.

So there, I have two screenshots, both of iPhoto 9.4.3, both using the same photo, both with the Adjust sliders in exactly the same positions, but with dramatically different results. iPhoto 9.4.3 clearly has a bug.

I have noted with interest Aplle's claim to have a new, improved higlight and shadow correction tool in Aperture.

A look at their own supposed example shows that it is no such thing.

The picture of the man and girl in the grassy field shows how the shadow correction takes a nice azure sky and turns it cyan.

Rubbish, Apple, absolute rubbish.
