Thunderbolt to FireWire adapters

What is the actual release date of Thunderbolt to FireWire adapters in July? I understand they say it's in July but now we are down to the final weeks and still no word on the actual release "day". I just bought a MacBook Pro with Retina display as well as an Apogee Ensemble and when they arrive they'll basically be very pricy paper weights since I can't connect them until I get that adapter.

You have 14 days to return your MBP with Retina display. You can replace it with a non-Retina MBP that does have FW. Apple announced the adapter in June but has yet to deliver. Who knows when it will come out? I've heard September.

I don't blame you - Apple announced a product and you expected that they would deliver. But they haven't and no one knows when they will. There are no third-party TB>FW adapters so I'm assuming that there's some sort of engineering problem with such an adapter.

There are some audio interfaces that have been announced for Thunderbolt but they are not yet shipping. No one knows when.

If you need FW, just exchange your Retina display model for a standard MBP.

That's what I would do.

I agree, there are no alternatives to firewire just yet when it comes to professional use (at least in portable audio devices). It was really too early to ditch firewire completely and put a useless HDMI port there instead which can be easily fungible by existing adapters. But okay, just let's wait till the end of July and we will see. Mountain Lion release is today, maybe this adapter will be released soon too.

I had the same problem with Firewire 800 Legacy drives. I was at wits end, but guess what, in desperation, I plugged my g-raid 4TB drive via its USB 2.0 port into my new Retina Display Macbook Pro's USB 3.0 port, and it works!!!! The speed I'm getting out of the system is superb for a USB 2.0 connection!!! I am running fcp 7.0.3 with Apple Prores 422 (HQ) and 444 media on a timeline that is 90mins long, and it has nested sequences.

So before you give up, try the USB connections in your legacy drives, it might just work for now! But Apple better start releasing those thunderbolt to firewire800 adapters :-)

I may be missing where it says July or they may have changed it over the last 24 hours, but I don't see that it says July anymore, just "(adapter sold separately)". I am going to be an optimist and assume because it doesn't say "Adapter coming soon", it means that showing up in the apple store is imminent......hopefully I am not being too much of an optimist :-)

Shootist - where are you getting that screen shot? When I go to the specs page that I have bokmarked, I see the same as mr da.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for those who purchased MBPR's that there is a TB>FW800 adapter coming out, as Apple announced. Again, a couple of weeks ago, an Apple employee told me that it would be September. I hope that she was right.

Someone pointed out that it's not present (and it was never even there) on the Apple Store page because Apple doesn't do pre-sales.

But it's mentioned on the product page: http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/ (still as July).

Yes that is the page I took my SS from.

Honestly I would expect that other page to be changed at anytime now as ISMO that Apple has canceled the release of this adapter.

I hope that isn't the case for all those that bought a Retina MBP and need FW. But as I said a few times before Apple is famous for leaving their users out in the cold, up the creek without a paddle.

I have no idea. Not spreading anything. Look for your self. Two conflicting spec pages. Which one is correct?

Not listed at all on one and listed on the other with a due date sometime in July.

Pick one and hope or forget about it.

Some even say it was available on the Retina custom order page as a pre-order at one time. I don't know about that as I never look at it that closely (only to configure one with all upgrade just to see what the total cost was. Astronomical if you ask me. I would never spend that much on any computer let alone a notebook).

Wishing you well.

Glad to see I wasn't looking in the correct place and that the page does still say July. Re: shootist's comment, I don't think the lack of mention of the adapter on another page would in any way imply that it has been cancelled.

We'll find out whether its been delayed or not soon enough, as July is quickly drawing to a close..... (I expected them to wait to get near the end of the month anyway, but did expect it to be at the same time as the mountain lion availability, so I was wrong there.....)
