Unable to connect to public wifi that requires log in

I have an Iphone 4s. Got it last October. It connects to my wifi at home fine. Connects to other home networks and public networks fine too, as long as there is no log in page required for subscription. If there is a log in page required to join a public network, the phone finds the network and I get the connection signal in the top left corner, then it seems to try and open the log in page but it gets hung up there ALL THE TIME. It does this at several different public places now. Restarting, resetting network settings, reset all settings on phone but nothing fixed it. My daughter has a 4s, my wife a 3g. They have no problems connecting when they are in the same public places. I also had no problem when I was using my 3g in theses same places. I have a friend/co-worker who has a 4s, and he has the same problem as I. I have found a way around it, perhaps suggested by someone here? If I turn my phone to airplane mode, then turn my wifi on, it will load the log in page for the public wifi and I can connect. Then turn airplane mode back off and it will stay connected to wifi. This is inconvenient, especially because in several of these public wifi places you have to renew the lease frequently so I have to go through those steps again. Any suggestions or ideas?

I was doing some more searching and I think I came across something that seems to be working...here at work anyway. Someone suggested turning off "auto fill" under safari settings. I had that turned off, but within that setting there was an option "use contac info". I had that set to on. When I switched it to off and went back to try and log in to the network, the log in page popped up like it was suppose to and I was able to agree to the terms and log in no problem. I'm hoping this is a permanent fix, time will tell.

I went through all of the above and nothing worked. I then got it to work, this is what I did. I chose the wifi hotspot and and it said "security Recommendation" underneath, so I clicked on it. On the next page there is a line in blue text saying, "learn more about recommended settings for wi-fi" I clicked on that and the wifi login screen immediately appeared for me to sign in. It worked perfectly from then on, after taking me 2 days to get the wifi to work.

I was having the same problem and went through many solutions which are listed below, the last being the final and only way that I found to fix it. They are listed in easiest to most difficult

1. Reset Network Settings (Settings/Reset/Reset Network Settings)

downside: you'll lose all of your wi-fi passwords

2. Reset All Settings (Settings/Reset/Reset All Settings)

downside: you'll lose all of your wi-fi passwords and a lot of other settings too numerous to mention.)

3. Erase Content and All Settings and then restore from backup

Make sure that you have a current backup before doing this and that you have access to open wi-fi to restore your phone. This didn't work for me, but you don't have to go through the steps in no.4 which requires being at an Apple Store.

4. Take your phone to a Genius Bar and ask them to do a DFU reset of your phone

Unlike Erase Content and All Settings, this is like a clean wipe of your phone's OS. The equivalent of doing a clean install as opposed to an OS update. This was the only way that I could get the issue resolved on my phone. You may or may not need a Genius Bar appointment as it only requires them to plug the phone in and 5-10 minutes later your phone is wiped, but if you want to be sure, make an appointment if you can get one easily.

When synching your phone to restore your apps, DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP as whatever was causing the issue originally will be reloaded to your phone. If you have a lot of apps, when you do your first synch, uncheck the Synch Apps Automatically, then you can choose which apps to synch and organize them in iTunes.

BEFORE DOING STEPS 3 AND 4, TAKE SOME SCREEN SHOTS OF WHERE YOUR APPS ARE SO YOU CAN PUT THEM BACK WHERE YOU WANT THEM. To take a screen shot, hold down the home and sleep buttons simultaneously. The photos are going to be wiped from your phone once you do the reset, so make sure they are uploaded to your photo stream or to someplace where you can accss them before wiping your phone.

The jury is still out on whether my problem is totally resolved. I was out and about yesterday and was able to login to several hotspots that required an "agreement screen", but it did seem to struggle a bit more than when i connected with my iPad.

I would suggest that the problem lies within an iTunes app. I was having the same problem After a number of different attempts Apple suggested that I wipe out my iPhone to factory settings and give it a try. Voila. It worked.

However, once I restored by back-up it stopped working. Apple thought it might be a problem with the hardware and sent me a replacement phone.

The issue is exactly the same with this phone. With factory settings and no apps, I can connect; with my resstored backup, no luck. 😠

I'm going to try deleting one or two apps at a time and hopefully find the culprit.

I am guessing that those who have the App Onavo??? If you do this is the problem. Go into Settings, General, Profiles and remove the profile. Then,

Reset Network Settings (Settings/Reset/Reset Network Settings)

downside: you'll lose all of your wi-fi passwords

This will fix the issue. Onavo is working on a fix for this. I suggest not re-adding the profile till they have an update for the App.

FYI Deleting the App alone will not fix the issue.

I had the same problem.

My solution was to disable 'block pop-up' in safari settings.

Yay!

Now, that sounds like the most sensible, low-tech, why-didn't-I-think-of-that?, what's-bloomin-wrong-with-Apple-and-their-so-called-'geniuses'?, Occam-would-approve, grassroots solution I have read so far... 🙂

(It took me 24 hours to figure this out, argh!)

Kudos, if you're right. It's taken a great number of people (whole teams of self-professed experts and all of Apple's Tech-Note writers) a lot longer than 24 hours to fail to figure this one out and share it. 😕

Having been mightily frustrated again today due to this issue, I shall greatly look forward to trying out this workaround and will report back.

TBH I did think of it but I'm new enough to iOS not to realise that such settings for Safari wouldn't be controlled from within Safari like on a proper grown up desktop OS.

And, I have to say, if this proves to be the answer, I shall be mightily peeved with Apple (yet again) for screwing this sort of thing up (yet again) on so many levels (oh so many!).

As if I should even be surprised any more.

But I'm getting ahead of myself - I can't quite cope with the heady mix of giddy excitement at a possible fix and incandescent rage at Apple for generating this great galluphing mastodon of a pain in the jaxie.

Laters.

OK i've solved it!

It's a real "You're gonna kick yourself" solution... not quite the "Allow Popup Windows" fix proposed by Amand1neabove (though that may be a compent) but just as simple.

  • When you can't log into public WiFi ...
  • because the Server times out ...
  • or the login/registration page won't load ...

********Simply do this***********

  1. Go into settings> WiFi and tap the little info icon for the network you are trying to join
  2. If you see two slider buttons, these are the cause of your woes
  3. One says "Auto Join" (or similar) - you can leave this ON
  4. The second button is "Auto Login" - you must turn this OFF
  5. Now go back and reselect the network.
  6. If the login page doesn't come up automatically, open a Safari window and enter any address
  7. Bingo!

I have reproduced this issue and solution in 100% of the public WiFi spots which I could previously not access. Please note that I also have "Block Pop-Ups" turned OFF in Settings> Safari, though I do not know if this is a necessary step.

I have filed a bug report with Apple. Feel free to contact them yourselves if this workaround works for you.

Also, please mark this as "Solved" if it works for you so that others will know how to connect to public WiFi.

Peace y'all.
