Sorry for being unclear, Kappy--was asking for advice on the hardware side; thus my request not to change focus to alternative software programs.

After a phone conversation with the fine folks at Other World Computing, it appears running an emulator won't solve my particular dilemma---the architecture of the Air is built for Lion. Instead, I'm going to try installing Snow Leopard on a bootable external drive. The video linked from bretkennedy's post (earlier in this thread) is terrific. Walks through every step, from beginning to end.

Kappy:

I have not tried this, but this Mac World article indicates how to build a Mac OS X 10.6.7 Snow Leopard Install DVD and I wonder if this would solve the boot problems indicated in this thread:

If you are unable to complete the external hard drive Snow Leopard dual-boot solution you are attempting:

1. You can run Adobe Go Live in emulation in Snow Leopard; OWC is just uninformed on this issue.

2. The commonly held belief that running Snow Leopard client in virtualization in Lion is prohibited by Apple's Snow Leopard EULA is an urban myth. It is true that Parallels and VMWare do not provide for direct installation of Snow Leopard into their respective products.

So, here are installation instructions for Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7 (or 8):

It would look something like this:
